The first was 60 years ago, in 1966, away at Chester City and was the last of the campaign. Leading 1-0 until the 71st minute Chester equalised whilst our centre half, Alan Rivers, laid injured in our penalty area. As a result of that goal the Hatters missed out on promotion from the Fourth Division by nine one hundredths of a goal (when goal average, rather than goal differences was used). However, less than six months later the wheels were put in motion to achieve that goal, with the appointment of Allan Brown as manager.
The other match was 41 years ago and was the last game of the 84-85 season. A 2-0 home win against Everton also marked the last appearance for David Moss.
4 players have been born on this day. The first was John Semple in 1889, then Jimmy Drinnan in 1906, followed by David Preece in 1963 (after whom one of the stands at Kenilworth Road is named, having sadly died at a very young age in 2007) and lastly George Donnelly in 1988.
As the link to directors and staff above shows today is also the birthday of our ex manager Nathan Jones (from Jan 2016 - Jan 2019 and then again from May 2020 - Nov 2022) who was born in 1973.
