In 1996/97, Middlesbrough couldn't field a team against Blackburn. The loudest voice calling for a points deduction came from Southampton who were near the bottom of the table. Middlesbrough were docked three points and, as a result finished on 39 points instead of 42 and were relegated. Southampton finished on 41 and stayed up. As it happens, they would have stayed up on goal difference with Coventry going down but still sweet revenge for Middlesbrough.

The more I read about Southampton..this confirms to me that they are a shithousery set up..so no sympathy at all..this article.. along with the Ruper Lowe administration period..then saying the playoff punishment worse than ours..I just detest them now..3cr radio Luke Ashmead a fan as well

I remember that too, although must admit that i had forgotten that Southampton were the beneficiaries. 29 years ago!!!! Where has that time gone! Live justly, love mercy, perpetuate generosity, walk humbly.
