New head of recruitment
Posted by Bushmead Hat on 18/5/2026, 10:36:21
William Lancefield from Hearts, per Pete O’Rourke on Twitter.
Ex Southampton and Norwich scout, has worked with Brighton and Spurs as an analyst.
Our previous recruitments for head of recruitment has been wholly unendurable, excruciating and appallingly awful. Just look at the two Forwards we've signed in the last couple of windows.
It was obvious recruitment couldn’t continue as it was. This looks a very interesting move, fingers crossed Wilshere and Lancefield are in sync and can hit the ground running so some of the overhaul is done pre-Spain.
Seems a strange time to be leaving Hearts but I've seen a couple of people say he's based in the south and doing the job remotely, so that may be a factor.
He's been at Hearts since 2021 so I wonder if Tony Bloom's recent involvement is another factor. Bloom has his own analytics platform that he implements at his clubs. Maybe that reduced Lancefield's input.
Or could mean that he is very invested in a data led model of recruitment. Hearts have had great success casting the net far and wide for lesser known players. Marc Tracy’s appointment to the recruitment team last year seemed to indicate a shift in focus and a return to a more uk based model scouring the lower leagues which had served us well on our rise through the leagues. This, appointment, while it is a different role, seems to suggest we will look to continue to be international with our recruitment, as well as keeping an eye on the uk
I wouldn’t be so sure. A large part of Hearts’ recent success is down to the fact that Tony Bloom (of Brighton and Bloomball fame) is now a minority shareholder (29%) at Hearts. He has given Hearts access to his lauded Jamestown analytics, so recruitment has been on a par with Brighton. Will our new Head of Recruitment be as successful away from access to that? I hope so. Be he may not be the golden bullet alone.
Worst case scenario is that his role meant he saw first hand how Jamestown analytics works so can bring that knowledge in. But it does beg the question whether we can/should try and buy these services from Bloom the same way in which Ipswich do? It can't be that more expensive to our current set up with our flawed recruitment?
