Hatters Heritage - On this day

    Matches played: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/matches?played-today=yes&sort=date-desc

    Born today: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players?born-today=yes&sort=date-active

No player has made their debut today.

2 matches have been played today. The first was 63 years ago when Stanley Matthews, at 48 years old, was to score the second goal and inspire Stoke City to a 2-0 win and with it promotion as Champions from Division 2 (now the Championship) whilst we were relegated to Division 3. Stanley Matthews would go on to play his last League game at 50 years and 5 days old in February 1965. Unbelievable Jeff !!

The other match was 9 years ago, in 2017, when we drew 3-3 at home to Blackpool in the 2nd leg of the League Two Semi Final play off. A bizarre injury time own goal, unfortunately, proved to be the decider and meant we lost on aggregate 6-5.

Only one player has been born on this day and that was Frank Pearson in 1884.

It was also Stanley Matthews only goal against Luton in 12 attempts.

I don't have information on all opposing goalscorers but you won't be surprised to hear that of the ones I do have records for, Matthews is by far the oldest.

The only other player I know of age 40 or older to score against us is John Goodall, who was 41 when he scored in Watford's 3-0 win in April 1905.

At the other end of the spectrum Theo Walcott is the youngest opposing goalscorer I've found, and the only 16-year-old (Southampton, 2005)

Among the 17-year-olds to score against Luton are Paul Allen (West Ham, 1979), Tony Cottee (West Ham, 1983) and James Milner (Swindon, 2003).

That Southampton game was on the day of the Buncefield fire and that evening Walcott won Young Sports Personality of the Year.

The second oldest player to appear against Luton that I know of (after Matthews) is John Willie Sutcliffe, who was 43 when he played in goal for Plymouth against us in 1912. Sutcliffe is apparently also the last person to represent England internationally at Rugby Union and Football.

Peter Shilton was also 43 when he played for Plymouth against us in October 1992.

I enjoy reading the reports of the games. Chiltern doesn't hold back if a player played badly
