Hatters Heritage - On this day

Posted by Strider on 17/5/2026, 7:20:14

    Matches played: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/matches?played-today=yes&sort=date

    Born today: https://hattersheritage.co.uk/players?born-today=yes&sort=date-active

Only one match played today and that was 44 years ago, in 1982, when we finished the campaign with a 3-2 away win at Cardiff City. Two goals from Brian Stein and one from Mal Donaghy put us 3-0 up, before 2 late goals from Cardiff gave a gloss to the score and with it an end to our Champion winning season in Division 2 (now the Championship).

4 players have been born on this day. The first was Sid Neal in 1899, this was followed by Wayne Thomas in 1979, then Jim Stevenson in 1992 and lastly Daiki Hashioka in 1999.

Not surprisingly, with only one match played, no player has made his debut on this day.

Wayne Thomas apparently turned up at office shouting his head off to his agent (presumably) on phone outside. “Fking ended up at Luton town,… “

Standing around pissed off just before his pics were taken. Wearing matching denim shirt and jeans 😄

Half of their fans had left before they scored their goals. It was in the days when the season ended on different days for different teams and was on a Monday night. As I have posted before, the home fans didn't take too kindly to the result and the fact that it relegated them. I was hit on the head by a golf ball thrown from the home section to our right.

I was there too and I remember it being a bit of a nerve shredder walking back to the car. From memory Bolton were relying on us winning or order to preserve their status and there was a Bolton fan - maybe a handful of them - stood among us.

There certainly was no welcome in the hillside in 1970 when a volley of half bricks were thrown as we left Cardiff station.
