Hatters Heritage - On this day

Only 2 matches have been played by the Hatters on this day, both in the 1980’s and both were drawn 1-1.

The first was 44 years ago when, in front of a crowd of 14,463, we played at home to Barnsley at the end of what was our Division 2 Champions winning season. Before the game we were presented with the League trophy, but in an uneventful game the only highlight was a late Brian Stein goal for the equaliser.

6 years later, in 1988, we played away at Nottingham Forest in what was our 58th and last game of the season. It must be very unlikely that this number of games will ever be beaten by the club in a season again. A goal after only 88 seconds by David Oldfield put the Hatters in the lead but Forest equalised on the hour before the curtain fell on an historic season, when we were to visit Wembley 3 times and pick up our first major trophy in the last of those games.

4 players have been born on this day, with the first 3 all being born at least 117 years ago . They were John Pickering born 1884, then John Bratby born 1895 and Arthur Nelson born 1909. The only recent player to be born on this day was Scott Neilson, who was born in 1987.

Although it is unlikely that the figure of 58 games will be beaten, it is by no means impossible. We played 57 games this season for example.

Surprisingly it's already been beaten four times since.

        2010/2011 - 61
        1996/1997 - 60
        2016/2017 - 60
        2011/2012 - 59

We also played 60 games in 1898/1899 if United League games are included.

          Thanks for that info FrednBob.

The United League is unique in that it is the only time in our history that we came top of a League (and by some distance) in 1897/98 and then, in the following season, bottom (and again by some distance). I guess we must probably have played mostly reserve players in the games in season 1898/99.
