Hatters Heritage - On this day

3 important games in the history of the club have occurred today. The first was 58 years ago today, in 1968, when we won 2-1 at home to Brentford. Played in front of the ITV cameras a crowd of 14,643 turned up to watch our club captain Terry Branston being presented with the Cup for being 4th Division Champions, prior to the game. He then led the players on a lap of honour around the pitch. This is the only occasion that I can recall the presentation ceremony being held before the game.

The next game on this day was 14 years later, in 1982, and was also a cause for celebration as, in front of 16,657, we beat QPR 3-2 to secure the title of Division 2 champions.

The third match of note was 9 years later in 1991, when we played Derby County at home and won 2-0. However, rather than being remembered for celebrating a Champions winning game we were this time delighted to be celebrating staying up on the last day of the season. In front of a crowd of 12,889 an own goal by Mick Harford 4 minutes before half time, set us on our way. 2 minutes after half time Lars Elstrup then scored our second goal. This meant that for the third season running we had stayed up on the last day of the season by winning, after having beaten Derby away in 1990 and Norwich City at home in 1989.

The only player to be born on this day was Stephens O’Donnell in 1992.

No player has made their debut for the Hatters on 11th May.

I loved that Barnsley game. Carnival atmosphere in the Maple with loads climbing the floodlights.

Do you remember the fellow with the young black lad on his shoulder and everyone singing ‘Ebony and Ivory’ ?

You’re correct CJ, I just looked it up on Hatters Heritage 😂

I obviously don’t recall when they changed League presentations to being after the game .

More due to the fact that we didn’t win anything for years I think
