The Golders Green knifeman was jailed for nine years over a knife attack on a policeman and police dog in 2008.
He had been reported to Prevent, and was known to police and secret services.
Furthermore, Channel 4 News revealed that he was released from an NHS psychiatric hospital just days before he carried out the attack.

Our police, unlike in the USA, are not trigger-happy idiots, thank goodness. They are not issued with firearms as a general thing, and those policemen who are in a firearms squad are specially trained not to go all gung-ho "shoot first and ask questions afterwards". Which is more sensible and less likely to result in multiple deaths.

NAGsThe UK armed police (especially the MET) can be just as trigger happy. The Brazilian executed on the tube and the fella shot in East London for carrying a table leg wrapped in plastic bags spring to mind.

Those may have been isolated incidents. There are armed police at Luton, Heathrow, and Stansted airports (observed while from travelling to and from those) but I've never seen the weapons being used, or even aimed at someone.
