51 years ago today we got a vital 3 points in a Division 1 relegation scrap at Carlisle. Having gone 1-0 down in the 56th minute we equalised 6 mins later with, somewhat unusually, a diving header from John Aston. The winner came 2 mins from the end when a cross from Ron Futcher was misjudged by Ross, the Carlisle goalkeeper. This win meant that the town were therefore on 23 points, only 2 points behind Spurs (who were the team above us) with 9 matches to go and a game in hand.
5 players have been born on this day. The first was Alf Black in 1902, this was followed 4 years later by Jack Nelson in 1906, then Bill Fellows, also 4 years later in 1910. It was to be another 75 years before the next Luton player was born and that was Curtis Davies in 1985, with the last player being James Dance in 1987.
Only 1 player has made his debut on this day and that was Dave Sexton in 1952, who went on to play 6 games for us in that season and a further 3 games in season 52/53, with his last game being on 28th February 1953.
However, is not his short playing career at Luton for which most fans will remember him, but as one of the most innovative and astute coaches and managers of the late 20th Century. After initially managing at Leyton Orient he moved to Chelsea and in 1970 he led them to FA Cup Final replay success in two of the best Cup Final matches I have watched. The replay remains, and is likely to do so, the most watched domestic football match in the history of British television. Following this success he led them to European Cup Winners Cup glory the following year.
His next job was at QPR where in 1976 (with another team of great entertainers including Stan Bowles, Gerry Francis, Dave Thomas and ex Luton players Don Givens and Don Shanks) they were to come runners up in Division 1; their highest league position ever. He later managed Man Utd to the 1979 FA Cup Final (in what was to be another exciting match). He then went on to coach the England U21 team between 1977-1990, and again in 1994-96, leading them to UEFA Championship success in 1982 & 1984.
