This is a great topic. I'm older than most on this forum and was a teenager when pirate radio came on the scene. The DJs on them to a man were light years ahead of anything the BBC had at that time. In fact the BBC, who had a radio monopoly at that time, played as little contemporary music as they could get away with and their DJs were the likes of Pete Murray and David Jacobs, ex Forces broadcasters. If you tuned into the BBC at that time you were more likely to hear Mantovani and his Cascading Strings or the Victor Sylvester Dance Orchestra. It was crashingly boring. The pirate stations with the likes of Tony Blackburn, Johnnie Walker and many others were a breath of fresh air and they blew the BBC out of the water. Even my father, born in 1922, tuned into them. So I take my hat off to all of those pirate DJs. They brought us something far better. Whilst on the subject I may as well nominate the worst. For me that's Saville, not just because he was a scumbag but because he knew next to nothing about music. How he got a job as a DJ is beyond me.
I still listen to Radio Caroline, still much better than the usual mainstream guff “You get a wonderful view from the point of no return.” Terry Pratchett
Mark Radcliffe Marc Riley Gideon Coe Iggy Pop Cilian Murphy Sarah More Peach or whatever her surname is Cerys The English bloke who is into Brazilian music, forget his name,Chad a documentary about 10 years ago where he seemed to be taking the credit on behalf of the musicians he was bigging up which severely pissed off my mate after we watched it And the old woman on radio 6 can't remember her name, been going for donkeys years now outlaws is not the barometer of sanity. You're either Luton full tilt or you are nothing. The end.
