    Heat pumps

Posted by deeuu on 17/2/2026, 11:07:55

Considering they cost far more, even with government grant of £7500, the payback is often 10-15 years…..if that.

Most homeowners move after around 8 years.

What is the point, why are the government pushing this!

What happens when the government stop funding!

When doing some work to my house last year I asked very builder I got a quote from their opinion on these hwta pumps.

All of them said it's too early to install them and they need to improve. Not worth it if your house isn't fully insulated and most in England aren't.

Stick with a decent combi is my advice

Hear pumps are a con unless you combine them with solar as they actually use so much electric to run them. Can't remember where I read about it now but I have a friend who's got one for about 3 years and regretted it.

Hmmm, sounds like your friend got twatted by a bad installer.

Dale Vince of ecocity fame..was on tv..he openly said heat pumps need to remain on..are expensive to use..and need solar and battery to make efficient...no solar your electric bill will soar

Well given that they are electric, and typically replace gas (and gs bills), of course the electric bill is going to go up.

They are much more efficient, producing several times the energy output than they consume, but electricity prices are stupidly high because Moribund has loaded them with all sorts of additional costs to take us towards net zero.

That's really not the main reason that electricity costs are so high though is it?

That could be where I heard it. As MG says it seems to fly in the face of how they've been marketed however, my friend's anecdotal evidence suggests that DV is correct. Unlike many on here I've actually got a lot of time for Dale Vince.

Okay, so that seems to contradict most of the evidence out there . . .

He was on the politics lunchtime show..3 weeks ago..maybe you can find it on player.. he slated goverment grant policy as will push up elec bills..said you need solar etc..another panelist commented that he was aware of bills trembling where pump but no panels where installed..Vince is not a fan due to electric use..if 50% houses have them..grid could not cope he said

Ah okay, but the point is that while electric bills will likely go up it is made up for by the facts that gas bills will inevitably go down.

Trebling still sounds extreme, would be interesting to see what data is behind that.

But all this is playing round the edges, while we are dependent so much on gas (physically as well as because of the charging mechanisms) bills will both be high and unpredictable.
