52 years ago today we played a match that although Luton lost 0-4 I will always remember for the best goal which I have ever seen scored against us at Kenilworth Road. In front of a crowd of over 25,712 (which hasn’t been beaten since and now never will be) it was scored by Keith Weller. Since the match was on TV it was also witnessed by millions on ITV’s “The Big Match” the next afternoon and the end of that season was voted as the “Goal of the Season”. The match in question was a 5th Round FA Cup game against Leicester City.
Only 1 player has been born on this day and that is Magnus Okuonghae in 1986.
6 players have made their debut on this day with the first being Robert Carte in 1938, followed by Hugh McJarrow in 1953, Paul Gray & Marvin Johnson in 1988, Gary McSwegan in 2002 and finally 5 years ago Eli Adebayo in 2021.

I’m gonna argue the toss on the ‘best goal scored against us at KR’.

The club used to produce a video of all the goals from the season around that time but unfortunately, as yet, I haven’t seen them uploaded anywhere on line which would allow a comparison to be made.

Chiedozie for Notts County in our 5 3 win. Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885

Great goal that. I was in the Maple Triangle so had a great view of it.
Walsh's goal was a bit special as well.

Amazing game in a wonderful period. Went to Spurs for the 2-2 (took bit of a hiding outside the ground) and Liverpool 3-3.
Football at its best

That swashbuckling, Erroll Flynn, Cavalier, Prince Rupert and his dog, hell for leather football was a glorious period in our history. Mr J.C. The following year i believe, when he chipped his own keeper from somewhere near the tunnel area. i am sure one of our posters will have a better memory of the goal.

He was born in Preston but played for Australia including the 1974 World Cup after which we signed him although he first came to our attention a few years earlier when he played against us when we were on a pre-season tour over there.

Yes, only a year later I saw the best own goal I’ve ever seen against us, but this time in the League, and again the goal scorer was Keith Weller. Standing by the tunnel I got a perfect view, of how it curled in an arc beyond the goalkeeper and off the far post, so that I knew it would be a goal from the moment it left his foot.

I was in the Maple just to the right of the dugout so saw it leave his foot then players were in the way and I thought Wallington would get it...then limbs and a surge in the Oak Road.....
"Give to Weller" ringing around the ground was sweet revenge. Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885

I went to the Leicester match in 1974 I sat in the wing stand it felt like a Leicester home game. The only other time when I have attended a match when we were so comprehensively beaten at home was 1-4 against Ipswich the following season
