Get promoted to PL with a decent championship squad Rather than try to compete in the PL we decide to game the system and buy players intended to get us promoted again the following season January 2024 - we have chance to stay in PL and decide to have the worst transfer window in the clubs history - one dodgy Japanese defender and a couple of players from Reading who have subsequently proved to be not even good enough for L1 Summer 24 - random incomings and departures the end of which we end up with a squad which would struggle in L1 never mind Championship. January 25 - some more panic buys Summer 25 - another shit show of a transfer window with perhaps our only decent buy in the last year or so (Aasgard) being allowed to leave January 26 - again still refusing to sign a full back but at least some attempt to turn around the failures of the previous 2 years. All the above well known - so my point is that expecting us to beat Cardiff away from home is daft - we are objectively speaking an average L1 team probably right now overperforming not underperforming - JW is in my view doing well and should be supported. Playing RE shit football gets us nowhere in the scheme of things and certainly nowhere near 25k spectators in Power court. People forget what a mess we are in for one reason or another (none of it deliberate)

Before the PL play off final, many on here were saying if we went up we'd probably come straight down, so keep the squad that got us there, let them have fun in the PL and enjoy our days in the big time lights, take the money and run.
When we got promoted, that seemed to change and we apparently 'needed' to spend millions on 'better' players to give it our best shot.
Well we came back down, but lost a fair bit of our identity, backbone and team spirit in doing so (Lockyer was a blow that hurt also).
Makes me wonder if keeping that 'championship' squad together would have been the better thing to have done, and we would now still be a championship team building for another push at the big time. “You get a wonderful view from the point of no return.” Terry Pratchett

Barkley and Lokonga were not bought for the championship.

Lokonga was loaned in and was never going to stay after relegation, and Barkley was here for a year to rebuild his career, to get a move back to the prem. The breakup of the squad that got us to the prem in my opinion was an act of vandalism, it should have been done over a longer period, not in the way it was done.

His claim was wrong though.
What break up?
We kept most.

The transfer window prior to Prem league totally fucked us. The money we spent was totally wasted and handicapped us for a few seasons with the high wages some of these players were on.
I never once thought we would stay up but I hoped some of the £4/£5M players we bought in would have been sold on for big profits.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing but our recruitment at that time seemed to consist of paying big money for players that had once had a decent game against us. The irony is that our two best signings Ogbene and Barkley, were free's.
