Lonwijk

He’s never really MoM, but I think Lonwijk deserves a bit of credit. As a natural LCB, he’s got on with it at RWB for most of the season and rarely lets us down. He’s good on the ball, does the simple things well and is part of the side becoming more solid. In a week where there’s been a lot of talk about getting rid of the bad eggs, Lonwijk seems a Mr Reliable in the background - a signing where the recruitment team did spot someone with the right attitude.

He's improved, certainly. Quite poor at the beginning of the season. A lot better now. Keep it simple and he's fine.

Can't agree with the "good on the ball" comment. He loses possession marginally less than Makosso. Does a reasonable defensive job, doubt he would keep his place if Odoffin and Jones ever get fully fit.

He's been ok. I still think he switches off at times and we will get punished by better teams.
Not sure I would realise the option to buy at this stage.

It’s an obligation to buy if certain criteria are met. Would think he would meet a games played criterion, so unless promotion is another one…

You've been watching a very different player to me then mate. The amount of unforced errors he's done this season is ridiculous. It looks like quite a few teams have pinpointed him as a weekness snd attacked more frequently down his side. Huddersfield (a) he was shockingly bad. Probably the worst out of a very poor team.
That said, you've got have sympathy and make allowances that he is totally out of position. His attitude cant be faulted and he was, like everyone else, very good yesterday.

Good words bbb.I don't think he's very good.

Be interesting when Jones is fully fit. Wilshere has said Jones is his RB, But does Lonjwik get dropped or shuffled to the middle (presumably at the expense of Mads)

Andersen and Mengi have become too good a partnership to drop, which in itself is quite the turnaround for both players. So, yes, Lonwijk probably misses out for Jones. But I think he still deserves credit for the job he’s done filling in out of position, and I think his versatility would put him ahead of Naismith on the bench.

I agree, but it's quite funny given Naismith has played every position on the pitch during his career

Very true, but seeing him switched to left-back at Orient and somehow be even worse is the stuff of nightmares.

Lonwijk gets unfair criticism, he has done well enough playing out of position.
I personally wouldn’t drop him, his physicality and height are so important.

It's a fair point. We were a very small team, but with the new signings perhaps that's been addressed

Agreed, has improved and been decent recently now that we have a more settled side.
I think some players for whatever reason just become the focus. JJ had a good game yesterday but was weak for their goal. If that had been Nige, I think more would have been made of it on here.

Yes agree on JJ, he is playing well and I think will be very good, he is at the age where his body has caught up with the late growth spurt most have.
Another 2 years and he will bulk up a bit and won't get bullied so easily.
Not ideal him being isolated like that anyway.Bring compassion back.

Jj lacks pace imho which i feel will see him become a defensive midfielder
Re: Lonwijk
Posted by Jake on 8/2/2026, 10:11:27, in reply to "Re: Lonwijk"
He reminds me of Daley Blind who was technically good and lacked pace, he played Left back, but also CB and midfield.
I had this conversation with RR a few weeks ago, and pointed out that there are a few left backs playing in the Premier who lack pace, as long as you are good positionally it shouldn't be a big problem defensively.
As for going forward he is never going to be one that gets to the byline but is a decent crosser of the ball from deeper.
David Beckham never got to the byline and was one of the best crossers of a ball in the world.
Not saying he is at that level.BtwBring compassion back.

A young Naismith, JJ will be a championship player no problem. As he develops his understanding of the game he could go higher, the only doubt anyone looking at him would have is his pace. Other than that he is a very good propsect and improving gane by game.

Agreed, we’d be very vulnerable without his heading ability which I think keeps him in at that position.

I was surprised to see 6 foot 1 Devante patrolling the edge of our area yesterday for Bantams corners. I thought he would be needed in the goalmouth but clearly we had it sorted. A mixture of man for man -markers and blockers - and zonal worked. Against other teams Cole might be needed, Lonwijk certainly is. Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885

I wondered that but I'm guessing that will change once he's had a chance to learn our defensive tactics / organisation.

I'd put Nigel in for JJ if Jones, Odefinn ever get fit. JJ had massively improved but no way Nigel is getting bullied off the ball for their goal.

Really? I think Johnson is coming on very strongly.
I think I'd stick with him, he's much more confident with the ball too I'd say.
Re: Lonwijk

I would say JJ is the most improved in the squad, and will get stronger and wiser.
He is so good at linking play from deep and shows good understanding with his movement inside.
Think he is a permanent fixture if fit.Bring compassion back.

Don't get me wrong, I think he's come on massively, but if we had everyone fit and available he'd be on the bench I think. If Bramal, Odefinn and Jones are fully fit he struggles to start
Re: Lonwijk

Yes that's a bit different than saying Nigel should play there. It shows that we could get some real competition for places going . . .
