The dieing pub trade
Posted by bbb on 4/2/2026, 16:27:47 WUM 2
Between 8 and 10 pubs on average close for good every week in the UK. So bravo to Nigel Farage being the only British politician to come up with a genuine way of fixing the problem. Another superb policy from Reform.
Youngsters are more into gyms than pubs these days. Gyms are trendy. Not like 80-90’s like weirdos like me would spend hours there with other sweaty geezers. (Yes don’t think I ever saw a lady in a gym then! Now you have tons there to be seen)
Add the fact prices are too high. So some prefer home parties instead.
Taxation needs to be reduced on pubs, fair enough, but the pubs doing food, music, quizzes, events etc. in the Town are the one's doing well. To add balance, pubs were closing at a rate of knots under Cameron, May, the supremely useless idiot Boris and Sunak. Reform will dump this policy within a few months as they tend to do once it is costed. Bottom line: Use them or lose them. Don't moan when they're gone.
Labour's budgets haven't helped that sector but the local councils are also to blame.
A certain mid-Beds town incentivised a pub chain with "Spoon" in their name to locate within their town centre, hoping that would bring more trade to the town.
They were given free business rates for 3 years whilst the other hostelries were just coming out of Covid business rate grants so they now pay the full business rates.
Two long established pubs have already closed, two others on the brink and only able to open their doors on certain days/evenings as it is costing too much to employ bartenders.
One landlord told me they decided to close on Tuesdays as their average takings over the preceding 3 Tuesdays was £142 ... whilst paying for 4 bartenders to cover the day's opening hours.
This is without the independent pub benefitting from the bulk buying discounts negotiated by "Spoons" - they were selling the same ale cheaper than he buys it directly from the brewery.
Despite hoping to last until the World Cup 'boom' this summer, he is expecting to close his doors for good before April.
It is sad how many are closed, but vast amounts are badly run or in areas where the customer just isn’t there any more. I’m in hospitality world and it’s not as bleak as you think. One day publicans will wake up to its 2026 and make their offering more relevant.
They were shutting long before Labour were voted back in. Just as much as there was a small boat crisis (that's too strong a word) going way back under the previous administration.
Anyway, you carry on with your woes and worries. Our day will come
Then again, given that big Nige can't be bothered to vote in Parliament and half his new Tory MPs are too stupid to even walk into the correct lobby when voting I suspect they might not be very effective in government.
Again at the risk of people thinking this is defence, being absolutely f>ucking shit - at best - didn't seem to hamper bozo's lot when looking for enough thick c>unts to vote for them.
