    On this day

40 years ago today we beat Bristol Rovers 4-0 at home in the 4th Round of the FA Cup. I would maintain the 1986 team which played in that competition was the best we have ever put out in it.

5 players have been born on this day, although 3 of them were before the end of the 1st World War. The most recent player born on this day was Matthew Barnes-Homer, who is 40 today and therefore was born on the same as the above mentioned match.

4 players have made their debut on this day, the last being Cameron McGeehan in 2014.

Finally the only Director or staff member born on this day was Arthur Pembleton, our trainer from the 1938-39 season (before which he trained the reserves). In the “Extras” section of his bio I found the programme mention from Jan 1976 and the newspaper article from Oct 1948 quite poignant.

If we’d have held on to a 2 goal lead in the Q/F we might well have won it.

Mick Harford played in that 4-0 win only weeks after knee surgery if I remember correctly.

The late Marc North had a great game that day too.

I also believe that if Adrian Heath hadn’t scored straight after we went 2-0 up in the Everton game we could have won the FA Cup that year Caught Jester.

              WUM

Everton always had a charmed life against us.

To be fair it was a period of success for them

Good side be we were pretty good ourselves
