    On this day

Two matches from this day worthy of note. Firstly in 1971 (55 years ago) we played Nottm Forest in the 3rd round of the FA Cup. After an inauspicious start we went 1-0 down in the 17th minute but, after the goalpost was broken by Forest defender John Winfield (leading to a delay whilst it was replaced) the players upped their game and in the 69th minute we equalised with a goal from Malcolm MacDonald to force a replay. Watch out for the details of that game in 9 days time.

In 1989 (37 years ago) we beat Southampton 6-1 at home, only 2 days after losing 4-0 away at Wimbledon (commented upon in my “On this day” post on 31st December). Mick Harford and Roy Wegerle score 2 goals each and Kingsley Black and Ricky Hill chip in with the other 2 goals. The 6 matches on this day since then are best forgot.

3 LTFC players were born on this day. Steve White (who is 67) and two of our inspirational and trophy winning captains Kevin Nicholls (who is 47 today) and Ronnie Henry (who will celebrate his 42nd birthday today).

3 players also made their debut on this day, with the last one being Adam Watkins who came on as a substitute in a 1-0 FA Cup defeat at Southampton in 2010

Two things stick in my mind from that Southampton game - Adam Newton failing to score a "tap in" and a terrible "performance" by Gavin Ward.

If you read the headline in the match report then Richard Money seems to share your view about Gavin Ward.
