Wilshere appointment
Posted by Norm's Curry Goat on 14/10/2025, 9:40:31
Is everyones enthusiam to this appointment genuine or am I the only miserable cnut about it?
I cant see anything else to this other than the board going for the cheaper, inexeprienced option who they may be able to turn into yet another yes man.
Hope im proved wrong.

I'm kinda with you but hoping our more optimistic posters are right about Wilshere.
You are being a bit miserable, yeah. Obviously it's a bit of a stab in the dark, we can have no idea how good he's going to be. But neither did we know how good Jones would be, and that turned out well.
It remains the case that we have a strong squad for the level, and our current position is far too low for the players we have. But, there are clearly off the pitch concerns. If Wilshere can fix those and get the players playing, plus perhaps a stellar signing or two in January, we still have more than enough time to make the top 2, let alone top 6.
So basically - could be great, could be shit. Personally I find it more interesting and enthusing than picking a random 50 something who's managed half the clubs in the EFL...
By that logic, if taking wellens was not the cheap option then neither was taking matt Bloomfield from Wycombe.
I’d suggest that there was a fairly intense week where a group of people decided that JW had a good chance of doing the job right, and getting him in was affordable. Obviously any, literally any, appointment is a risk.
I can’t think of a single viable option that someone would have called cheap and someone else would have suggested was a waste of money (that could be spend on a decent left back etc etc). The cheap option would have been to leave Bloomfield in post having paid to get him here. But that would have been wrong too.

I don’t think Powell and Wilshire together are cheap options. An experienced head counts for a lot - I have no doubt that given his experience with top tier managers that Wilshire has a clear playing identity…Powell offers a level of practicality that we have missed i.e. we have to use the players we currently have in. Way that suits them. Whomever came in the issue is that we need to give them time. If it does not work straight away then so be it and it will not be Wilshire’s fault that it will take time to dig ourselves out of this spiral. But if we get the new manager bounce and confidence lifts we can still be in the Chapionship next year.

Lack of other options. It's a huge leap into the unknown but I was impressed with how he spoke yesterday and I've convinced myself that he was the best available candidate.
For example Wellens had a good season last year, but failed at Doncaster and Salford, and on reflection I'm glad that we've decided against that kind of journeyman.
Skubala seems to be doing good things at Lincoln, but he was literally a PE teacher and people threw that label at Bloomfield and Edwards as an insult. Wilshere definitely brings better contacts in the game compared to someone like that. They're also above us in the league, we need to recognise where we are.
Luke Williams might have been ok? But there's something about him that comes across as a bit thick. Wilshere seems a stronger character.
Chris Powell I imagine is also a lot more expensive with his experience than the average L1 Assistant.

I understand the nervousness and scepticism but we were never going to spend big so I reckon this is the best option based on that. We'll get reflected publicity from his name too
It might not work. All managerial appts run the risk of failing. If this one fails, the club will be in a very difficult position

Why does everyone assume it’s the cheap option?
Probably cheaper than Wellens, considering we would had to pay £1m to release him from his contract. But tbh, I don’t think the board were ever seriously contemplating Wellens (thank god). He may well go on and get Orient promoted, but I have a feeling he would’ve had another disaster is he’d come here.
The club deserve some credit on this one. It might not work out and the club will have to reflect on that if it doesnt but it's a gutsy, imaginative appointment
Hell's teeth, I very much doubt an ex-England international who has coached the Arsenal U18s side and been a first team coach at a Championship club plus someone like Powell is anything remotely "cheap" for a League One club.
