Our coaches used that method but with a patch on both eyes.

A friend whose lad was at Arsenal several years ago had to wear a device not dissimilar to the 'cone' collars used by vets on dogs/cats to stop them scratching their ears/faces!
The idea was that the lads could see the ball being passed towards them but, when it disappeared out of view, they had to rely on their ability to predict where it was to control it and then pass it back.
The exercise was devised to give the players confidence about looking up earlier for possible passes to team-mates making runs without worrying about the ball not being at their feet.

The downside was that all those Arsenal lads ended up spending all their spare time licking their own balls and sniffing each other
