    Recruitment team

Posted by Winger on 7/10/2025, 21:22:29

Yousuf Sajjad is the leader of Luton Town Football Club's recruitment department, serving as Player Recruitment Manager, with Jay Socik also taking a key role as Head of Recruitment Analysis.

This structure was established after a strategic restructuring in June 2025, which saw Sajjad and Socik lead the team following the departure of the previous head of recruitment.

Yousuf Sajjad: Joined the club in September 2024 and now leads the recruitment department as Player Recruitment Manager, focusing on talent identification to support the club's playing philosophy and long-term goals.

Jay Socik: As Head of Recruitment Analysis, Socik also plays a vital role in the revamped recruitment department.

Context of the Changes: The restructuring in June 2025 was designed to strengthen the club's data-informed approach to identifying talent.

Mick Harford, previously Chief Recruitment Officer, stepped back into new ambassadorial and senior scouting roles.

Marc Tracy was appointed Chief Scout as part of the revamp.

What’s your point?! They’re clearly not up to the job…?!

Alternatively, Sweet as the CEO, sets the budget. To align with this, he directs them to the clubs ethos of taking chances on injury prone players, as they are inevitably cheaper ‘market opportunities’ (as Yousuf referenced numerous times). Are we no longer targeting ‘process signings’?!

Conversely, the recruitment team draw up a list of promising targets. However, the lead negotiating team, which initially consists of Sweet and Mooney, fail to land our top targets, due to excessive ‘wheeling and dealing’; thus insulting selling clubs and/or players agents. Hence, we are consistently ending up with 5th/6th/7th choice etc.

Or perhaps, as Sweet outlined in his recent interview - he appoints managers to ‘run the football club from top to bottom’. An admirable ethos; however, it’s very convoluted thinking, appointing novices, with no substantive experience of running a football club and expecting them to make an immediate success, whilst they’re still learning on the job!

In any of the aforementioned scenarios, the buck stops with the CEO, as the head of football club operations.

As sad as it is to say, after all he sacrificed to help save the club, his time is well and truly up!

Data informed approach to signings. It's become Americanised. We've gone too clever.

The strategic restructuring was a crock of shit?

Exactly... Cause data doesn't tell you anything about how someone will fit culturally within a team, or whether they'll show leadership on the pitch or just cave in.

Gary Sweet needs to go. Our culture was killed when he forced players to stay who didn't want to be here.

                I'd agree with that.

But who employed them and decided on the data driven strategy bit?
