So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Posted by Whhatter on 21/8/2025, 12:23:24
Currently having an infusion for my Crohns at the L&D and got chatting to another fan earlier. We were discussing the best ever player to wear the shirt. He thinks it's Barkley but I said Ricky Hill. It's a bloody tough one, but I think the amount of times Hill played for us with his skill and effort just outweighs it.
Anyone else you would put up there??' Live for today, not for tommorow '
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
I'd definitely add in Kingsley, Steve Walsh, Scott oakes, pembridge and JLV. Barclay was superb and one of the best I've seen in the modern era. Black had so much natural talent. The night pembridge came back in the cup for Derby and won the game was impressive. For sheer consistency and utter class hill would take it.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
It depends on how far you go back the team of the fifties had many good players, Brown/Stocks teams were strong. Most Remember Pleat/Harford teams because of the success. Also Kenilworthroad pitches after the artificial surface, until more recent times, left a lot to be desired also priorto it.so it makes it difficult to compare players of different generations
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Mal Donaghy, closely followed by Brian Stein, Mick Harford and Ricky Hill. You could argue MacDonald and Barkley were ahead but those performed at a high level over a sustained period.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Ricky Hill no other contenders. Best Defender clos between Mal and Futcher. Mal wins it for versatility and longevity.
Best keeper close between Les Sealey and Aleksic Sealey wins on his organisation skills, let's face his defenders did what he said. Loved his passion. The journey leads you to the answers..
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
I'm not sure he was the "Best" player in any technical sense but Mick Harford was a fabulous player and hugely influential on how effective we looked overall.
For me starting at the end of the 70s it would have to be him or Hill. Hill takes the overall crown because of his longevity and long-term consistency with us.
However, on a per game basis Harford was at least as good in terms of contributing to how effective we looked overall.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
For me it’s a player who you can instinctively tell they are supremely comfortable at the level you are watching, you enjoy watching them play game in game out and the team is/was weaker in their absence.
So for me that covers:
Hill Stein B Walsh Harford Preece Donaghy Pembridge Wegerle Steve Davis Oakes Heikks Underwood Howard JLV Andre Gray JJ Lockyer Barkley Keeley
Typically most above have or went onto play at a higher level or International football.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
An impossible question, as it’s ultimately subjective.
Without doubt, Barkley lifted an average team into a good one, given the quality of his teammates and the opposition. Despite his efforts, had we not suffered key injuries without quality replacements, the team would have stayed up — and he would have been the main reason.
Had Hill been around today, he would have left us young and gone on to play for one of Europe’s great clubs. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
I’d have to say Bruce Rioch and Malcolm McDonald but I’m showing my age. Two personal heroes. Think others named were also pure class. Still also have a soft spot for Brian Lewis my first ever fav player.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
When Everton wore our orange Umbro away shirts at Kenilworth Road. Thus Beardsley played for Everton but wore a Luton shirt. Everton's blue home shirt was considered too much of a clash with the blue batwings on our shirts.

Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Doh! Why did I read Everton as Newcastle. I'm well aware of the Everton "incident" and the reason - I was there - Jackson had only just moved to Everton.
Now I know that you're an admin with editing facilities
It hadn't registered with me before today that Beardsley was involved in both of those occasions - I feel fairly confident that he wasn't in the Mansfield team when it happened with them
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
I was too young to see Hill but just based on what I've heard, clips I've seen, and his record then you can't really compare Barkley to him.
Barkley played for us 32 times. After a slow start, he was supreme for a spell through the winter but couldn't do anything to stop our decline once Nakamba and Lokonga got injured, didn't turn up at the end of the season and was overall part of a team that got relegated quite comprehensively in hindsight.
I enjoyed watching Barkley play a lot but in truth his impact wasn't very significant overall.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
I'll admit some of the stuff Barkley did was hands down some of the best I've witnessed but Ricky was so consistent for many years.' Live for today, not for tommorow '
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Exactly that. Barkley had a great season but it’s a very small sample size. Ricky was outstanding for 12 odd years for us Barkley is a career sicknote. Hill closely followed by Harford for me.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Gordon Turner probably a bit too early for most of the posters on here but yes, agreed, an absolute Luton legend and prolific goalscorer over a long career with the club.
I remember buying my Subbuteo sets from Shanks and Turner in the 60s.
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Bruce Rioch left us as a goal scoring number 10. Later became a box to box midfielder league championship winner with Derby. Scottish International when Scotland had an bonanza of midfielder talent. For me far and away our best ever player
Re: So who is the best player to ever wear the shirt?
Honourable mention for the great Wally Shanks. Absolutely loved that guy. I lived near the Brown Owl shop and always went in there for a sherbert dip and a packet of stickers, who always gave me a free pack and told me stories from his career.
Miss those days.' Live for today, not for tommorow '
