European Targets

Really enjoyed the interview with our player recruitment manager Yousuf Sajjad. I thought this bit was particularly interesting…
“We’re also limited with what we can recruit from Europe this season, as the number of work permits we are able to apply for in league one compared to the championship are reduced. We have hit the maximum number which fulfil the relevant criteria, with players that are already in our squad. This has reduced the pool of players accessible to us for the moment.”
Given that we have been putting more work into this area of scouting I’d imagine it must have been incredibly frustrating for the team not to be able to go after some European players this season that we might have identified last season.
Another reason why it’s so important for us to get back to the Championship - and yet another odd rule that seems to be designed to make the jump in quality between divisions that much greater.

How many players actually require work permits though?
Mads, Fanne, Makosso, Chong, Nakamba.
Presumably Wolves hold the permit for Nigel.
Wells must surely be a citizen by now.

Chong is probably either a UK citizen or has settled status, he moved to United aged 17 9 years ago.
The rule doesn't seem to be about visas per se anyhow, but that you're allowed a maximum of two visas that aren't endorsed by the league ("Governing Body Endorsement"). So Nakamba for example probably is endorsed by the EFL given he has 60 international caps or whatever.
I'd guess our two are Fanne plus probably Andersen (maybe Makosso or Nordas but they have full international and U21 caps).

I don't think it's that odd a rule, seems like common sense to me.

How come? Why should Championship clubs have that advantage?
Ironic really though isn’t it. I bet Arsenal didn’t even look at Gykores when he was at Coventry. They could’ve bought him for a fraction of what they’ve paid
