    3cr interview with Matt

    - Would be nice to bring in more creativity in attack/one more player if we can
-not close to signing anyone right now
-interest in several of our players
-will need to be adaptable in next couple of weeks

One more striker is needed, but we knew that. Interesting Bloomfield didn’t mention full-back. As he said, Kodua looked decent last night.
So did Bramall - I was impressed how quick he was - but Bloomfield made it clear he’ll take a while yet to get up to scratch. So, LWB anyone?
I wonder who the interest is for? We’d probably all hope it’s for high-earning fringe players like Nakamba, but “We’ll need to be adaptable” suggests a couple of core players might yet go. Ho hum.

Our 25/26 core players are seemingly Keeley, Kal, Christ, McGuiness, Clark, Saville, Wells and Baptiste.

For me any of the others here before this season can go if we replace them adequately.

Yates and Bramall obviously won’t be sold and neither will the loans.

So need better from all of these so if they leave then so be it.

Ali, Nordas, Nelson, Fanne, Woodrow, Chong, Marv, Holmes and Walsh

For me Ali is showing worrying signs of disinterest and we know how that ends up, I hope I am wrong and it’s more to the fact that he needs a settled position.

Christ’s ban could be timely also had there been any interest.

Can’t comment on Mengi as we haven’t been told any more about the injury.

We must secure automatic promotion so my criticism is merely objective to help get the strongest possible squad using the cash we have, as proven by the signings of Keeley and Yates.

You get what you pay for and Keeley is a perfect example of that.

Why “We must secure automatic promotion”? After the farce of that claim from Sweet and Edwards last season, I’d suggest lessons haven’t been learned in the Cuba house.
It’d be great if it happened, of course, but a season of promising consolidation after last season’s stupidity would be ok.
I’d largely agree with your assessment, but would put Fanne in the must keep category, and Alli assuming he hasn’t gone Full Mengi.

Consolidation was for last year. The longer it takes us to get promoted, the harder it will become. No excuses.

If we don't get promotion this season it will have been a 3rd year of failure IMO.
Even more so after last night as the manager clearly made the league our priority.

Why?? Is that a serious question?

Why…we have a significant financial advantage over other clubs in this league. We have retained some quality in the squad and no guarantees they would be here 26/27.

We have a new ground opening in 2028, being in the Championship is fundamental to making that work and not having a half filled stadium.

Tell me a club more financially stable in League 1 this season?

We must use our financial “clout” to add the extra quality it needs to be promoted and do our consolidated back in the Championship.

Also I missed Nigel in my above post, he is a very good signing.

Of course it’s a serious question. As you say, Power Court isn’t opening until 2028. Yes, we need to be in the Championship by then. But given the cost of PC, I hardly think we have anything like the financial dominance you’re implying.
That’s not to say I’m totally satisfied with our spending this summer, but my view is spending what we receive in outgoings is reasonable. We have a surplus, we need a full-back and a striker. If that happens and it doesn’t prove enough, then so long as the squad looks unified and motivated, whatever happens happens.

I don’t really care what positions we sign players in but we need to be more attacking and attractive to watch, the ridiculous new goal quick routine. WTAF.

Get the ball down and play.

We're two league games into the season with a mostly new squad. Attractive football isn't going to happen overnight.

The second half on Saturday was really promising. Your routine of always moving the goalposts is incredibly dull.

We beat a poor team on Saturday thanks to poor defending and a goalkeeping error.

                        Let’s not get carried away.

We have a solid keeper and defensive unit but we have to significantly improve further up the pitch to be more creative.

If fans are really going to be happy with “consolidation” in League 1 then I am wondering what the point is.

As bbb notes, not getting promotion with this squad and our financial situation will be a third season of failure.

We are lacking a creative spark.

Either Bloomfield has to create one with what he's got or we need to buy one.

Think he's just saying can we give it more than a couple of games for the team to gel.

Once we grew into the game the midfield on Saturday absolutely purred. With a fit Yates and a little more cohesion up front we'd have score another 2 or 3. I'd never felt so confident about keeping a clean sheet.

We are clearly in need of some creativity. Bloomfield said it himself. Let's hope he gets backed.

Hmmm, we looked rock solid that second half.

We scored two goals, not impressive ones defensively but our players got their very just rewards for their efforts.

It's a start, no-one is saying we are anywhere near great but there are positives whether you like it or not.

I think the below from Mike Simmonds is pertinent. The reactions post last night would have been different had let’s say we lost 3-2 etc, losing that game is irrelevant, but it’s the exposure of the lack of creativity generally and the fact that Nordas is our backup striker. Not helped by the mystery around Tovide and the fact that apparently there is no imminent solution in terms of incoming.

“ You can see why MB is after improving things in the final third as in Luton's three matches so far, they have had 62 touches in the opposition's penalty area, managing 31 shots, but only four of them actually on target, with three goals, one of them an OG.”

                                        It's what he does best.

Last season we needed 10 centre backs.
This season it seems it's more midfielders that Cuba wants. Not sure why when we have Saville, Baptiste, Walsh, Odoffin, Fanne, Walsh, and Clicker who all play central midfield.

No one's saying we're blowing teams away, no one is saying we couldn't use another forward or some more creativity. But relentlessly calling for spending more money, whenever we don't win, and happily ignoring the reality of the situation we're in, is purposely being a plank.

Cuba don’t half get some stick on here but most of his postings I agree with.

First 3 games have been underwhelming to say the least.

We will win most of the games in this dire division purely on the fact the opposition is dreadful.

Top two as it stands? Nah.

That’s a good point. There are a number of poor teams in this league who we will beat because we have better players.

However there are five or six teams who are better and we need to be better to beat them to ensure we are in the top two places.

Stockport for example have already beaten Bolton and Wycombe who based on the previous season are much stronger than AFC and Posh.

I suggested that if some fans are happy with consolidation in League 1……

Anyway after two games we can’t let two wins gloss over the lack of attacking options and that Wells has been our main creative threat, our best threat last night was from Woodrow.

The midfield for me is the issue, they are sideways and back merchants, playing five at the back doesn’t help.

Three games with only one goal conceded is obviously very promising.

But be honest in those 270 minutes how many clear cut chances have we created. That needs to be addressed either by shape or additions.

Or by letting the manager do his job, giving the player time to gel and get into a rhythm.

But also, my guess is we’ll sign that midfielder from Charlton and another forward.

Yeah agreed. I thought RR was a little harsh, Walsh was our only midfielder looking for players in a bit of space

I suspect the same people who were piling on Clark at the beginning of last season are the ones now picking on Walsh. They don't seem to notice the positive nature of much of their output. Positively weird to be honest.

Pretty concerning, especially bullets 2 and 4

In other words, we will be leaving it to the last minute to fill the glaring gaps in the squad and there will be more square pegs in round holes while we play the next 3 or 4 league games

                          Poor recruitment planning yet again

Based on what Bloomfield was saying about being reactive, I think it's more a case of we have interest in players we'd rather keep, so we can't recruit to replace them until they go.
I would imagine (hope!) we have a shortlist to replace them but we can't replace until they're definitely off

Well you would think so. Maybe Doughty leaving caught them by surprise. Nobody saw that coming...

Or even selling Morris and sending the two youngsters out on loan so we're left with Wells, Woodrow and Nordas up front.

This must be a complete surprise too.

But window is still open, so something might yet happen.

and Yates up front of course. Still a striker short IMO.

As I keep on saying, we are a forward short, 2 full backs (who can also play wing back) short, 2 creative midfielders short. But we probably need to ship out before we bring in. That isn't going well. Wonder if we're at the stage where we'll be paying off contracts. If we can afford to do that

Without improvements in those areas of the pitch, it's going to be a season of grind. We are looking decent at the back and in deep-lying midfield positions. We won't concede many. We, currently, don't have enough quality to create much. Unless Chong suddenly turns into a productive member of staff this season...

Can't be true, we were told we had learnt our lessons

Hate to say it, apart from a couple of exceptions, recent recruitment again no more than 6 out of 10. Not good enough
