Post-match thoughts

Shea - solid game. Cracking save from free kick Chigozie - wobbly start but grew into game well and had a good second half McGuiness - did everything required of him Holmes - good to have in squad if we're hit by injuries, good in air and strong but his lack of acceleration let's him down badly. Nippy opposition players leave him for dead. A weak link in our central defence today Kodua - some good runs and flashes of his potential. Still some way to go though Bramall - did really well but replaced half time probably diue to lack of fitness Fanne - excellent first half. Less influential second half Walsh - good game and our main outlet for spreading the play. Watched game with Coventry commentators and he was their MOM, and that included the Coventry players Nelson - good at retaining ball however not much in terms of attacking threat Nordas - best performance so far for me. Held ball up brilliantly and brought other players into game. Needs to improve game in the box Woodrow - samey Woodrow display. Decent, dependable but unfortunately forgettable
Notable sub mentions: Alli - notable by lack of end product tonight Phillips - some good trickery but still lots to learn. What is his position? Yates - needs chances creates for him. Did he get them? No
Final thoughts: - Some might say it doesn't matter as it's only a cup game but we've got a biggish squad that need minutes. This is an oppurtunity gone. If I were fringe players I'd be gutted - Despite a good start to the season, I'm not getting too excited about our prospects yet. We have a good defence and that is an excellent base from which to grow. However, our attack lacks joined up thinking and we are a while off still before it clicks - Don't wish to be harsh but IMHO Holmes cost us that goal and game tonight. Our defence without him could have held Coventry to a draw and at least we would have had a chance at penalties
Let's face it. most fans will never give Woodrow any credit for anything.

I thought McGuinness was really poor and if Simms hadn't fluffed a few chances we'd have lost much more heavily with McGuinness looking at least as culpable as Holmes.
Like last season, McGuinness is decent at routine aerial duals which looks nice on the eye, but he's got very little positional intelligence or discipline when defending the box and we'll ship a lot of goals with him in the side.

“Holmes - good to have in squad if we're hit by injuries”
Nope. He still be slower than a sloth. We’d need at least 8-9 central defender injuries before he got in any side I picked. Absolute waste of a squad space and mind boggling we signed him when we were a premier league club.
Good enough for PL (presumably we were hoping we’d stay up) - no Good enough for championship - no Good enough for league one - not for a team with aspirations of promotion
Not sure what game you were watching but Nordas while doing some hold up work close to the halfway line offered nothing in the final third. Countless loose passes and never once threatened the target.
If he stays as the backup striker we are NOT going to get promoted.
Woodrow worked hard and imho was trying to impress potential suitors.
The fact that we badly missed our 35 year old best player speaks volumes for the lack of quality in the squad.
Fanne and Nelson did nothing to demand squad consideration.
We need better players still, end of story.

I do agree we could do with more attacking depth, but you'll be banging the we need more players drum no matter who we sign and how well we're doing.

Agree with all that. The youngsters all failed to make enough of a mark to promote themselves beyond promising squad back-ups. Holmes forced to play LCB didn't work again. He can just about handle RCB but still gets caught on the turn. Walsh was our MOTM although Lonwick would have been if on from the start. As for Nordas- if think you're being generous! He failed to come short quickly enough on many occasions, turns to move too slowly and fails to find space. He just doesn't read the play quickly enough to be a league player.
