Ogbene

Nice to see him get a run out for Ipswich but just compounded my view that he lacks quality. I think another poor signing for us who we were lucky to end up profiting from. But the main point being is that there are plenty of average players out there changing hands for £5m plus and I can see why 20/20 don't want to get their fingers burnt again because I reckon it is even harder to land a "good" player when in League 1

Nonsense. Plenty of good players have been signed by Division 3 players over the years. It's down to the 'recruitment team' to find them.
As for Ogbene, his end product was hit and miss but we massively missed his pace. Especially last season.

well we can agree to disagree on that but again the main issue is that in the £1m to £5m bracket there are lot of duds
Re: Ogbene

Absolutely agree.
I assume (but may be wrong) that the baseline assumption on player singings is that they play successfully for the entirety of their contract and leave for nothing at the end of it. I think that’s middle ground between getting injured after 5 games and never playing again and doing really well for a couple of years and leaving for a “profit” on transfer fee before the start of the last year.
So what that means is A player signed on a £3.5m 3 year contract that plays 40 games in a season, gets 10% as a signing on fee and a salary of £15k about per week has a cost of £6.1m which is over £51,000 per game. For playing below the top domestic level (assume this is championship, and it’s what some of our fans are calling for in division 3). It’s absolute and utter fcuking madness.

It’s mad that in this day and age someone with a price tag of £1-£5m could be considered a dud but there we have it.
In other news, I wonder if Nordas gets a game today?

To be fair, there are a lot of players who cost far more than that and are considered duds - the likes of Antony at Man Utd or Nunez at Liverpool, for example."Never too high, never too low"
Re: Ogbene

It also depends on the definition of duds. Anthony has certainly flopped at United, but had previously done well elsewhere and shone on loan in Spain last season. More often than not it is a case of player and club not being a good fit for whatever reason.

Yep. Rarely does a good player become shit over night.

Disagree A big reason we went down last year was the decision to sell him without a replacement lined up (thank god we don’t do that anymore! )
Was also a big miss when he tore his hamstring in the Prem
Signed on a free and sold for £8m
Hopefully the Achilles injury won’t have slowed him down too much Truth seeker / snide

Disagree.
Was useful in the PL because we played on the counter all the time. When we went down I thought he looked lost on what to do with the ball at his feet and having to take players on without having space ahead of him (not that the manager helped with that).
Agree we didn’t replace him until jan though, but I’d take Alli over him every time tbh.

Looked lost in the Championship?!!!!
What are you on about.
He only played for us three times at that level.
He was coming back from injury - and in two of those games he had Walters alongside him playing RCB who had previously never made a senior appearance.

I thought Ogbene was a class player but only when he was played in the right position. He was immense against Brighton at home, if I remember rightly.

He was class that day but he also had a great chance to make it 5-4 late on.

Ogbene ran away from everyone but couldn’t dribble and rarely got in a position to shoot so it was just a sprint towards the corner flag, than a wait for the rest of the team to catch up followed by a backwards pass.
