Tovide and Gbode
Posted by Melbourne Hat on 8/8/2025, 7:49:01
Is this really the height of our ambitions, or worse, is this really the best we can do and finances are not as good as we have thought?
Neither Tovide or Gbode have pulled up any trees, having scored a total of 8 goals between them last season. In the fourth division.
We spunked over £2m on Nordas who 'is still not ready' and can only get a game playing for the U21's.
Seven figure fee (£1.5m?) for Yates, but he is not match fit yet so time will tell there.
What's the strategy here? Are we hoping for Adebayo and Brown to make recoveries sooner rather than later, and getting in someone from L2 to muddle through until then as backup for Woodrow, Wells and Nordas?
As ever, there is still three weeks or so left in the transfer window so anything can happen.

Probably better getting Elliott Lee and James Collins back, both have better goal returns than either signings mentioned. I don't suppose we could afford them!!!

Haven’t you seen, Woodrow is off to Boro or Oxford! For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

As a short term signing to help us get promoted is surely a better option than two lads who are raw talents with potential.
This season should be all about promotion.
Yates is a fine acquisition but if we are still looking for another I am struggling to see what’s wrong with Cheek or Jatta.

We have already signed two experienced strikers so signing a 3rd one would be utter nonsense. A young, hungry and pacey one is the correct route. Whether the 2 we have apparently been linked to are suitable is questionable.
We do not need another older striker. Please file Cheek away in the recesses of your overactive brain

I think it's a smart strategy, experienced strikers with raw potential. I also wouldn't read too much into stats at such a young age, look at some of the now established prem strikers and see what their stats were like at a similar age.

These type of players, to me, signal a move back to the type of signings we’ve been successful with before. Before we lost our way with transfer strategy.
Yeah we’d all like Al Hamidi, but the reality is it’s very difficult to convince a decent, young championship striker to drop to this level. Maybe we can get a premier league loan in, but with Yates and wells already signed, how much game time will they get?
The top players from league one last season have mostly gone to championship teams, or are rumoured to be going (Keillor-Dunn would be an amazing signing but will be in the champ next season)
It’s not like we haven’t signed two forwards with proven quality and experience. Yates will score close to 20 goals and Wells won’t be far behind. Wells and Alli got 25 goals between them last season. Yates got 21 the last time he played in this league. Let’s give them a few games before we start panicking?

There shouldn’t be a problem with buying hungry strikers on the rise from League 2, but there’s nothing obvious about either Tovide or Gbode to suggest they’re the answer to, well, anything. Why not just keep Pepple, if this is where we’re at? But the even bigger concern is LWB. Bramall might be decent back-up, but surely he can’t be first choice there? Bloomfield just said in the recent press conference that five at the back only works with good full-backs, yet he’s persevering with it despite admitting a centre-half in Lonwijk at LWB isn’t ideal. The parachute payments is a red herring, so is the Premier League riches. It’s the profit on transfers out not being spent that’s ridiculous. Yes yes, undisclosed fees, but the reasonable suggestions imply we’ve got a £5-7m surplus. So why are we seemingly only bothering with the middle aisle of Lidl?

Can't argue with any of that. Unfortunately, it is these unanswered questions that lead to the festering discontent on here.
On a separate note, if Bramall was out of contact why didn't he keep himself fitter/we sign him much earlier in the window? Why is Yates not up to speed as he was still under contract at Swansea?

Don't diss the middle aisles. A good bargain can be found.

It can be
But there's also a lot of dross in the middle aisle so it's a bit of a lottery
Don't forget we need to retain some money - if we do get promoted we will need, what £20m?, to buy players to survive in the Championship. Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885

I was thinking the same thing. The current squad should be good enough to get us promoted. If we don’t go up then it has to do with the players themselves or how they are coached/managed. If we do go up we’ll need to spend money on Championship quality. One other area which is forgotten is that we are losing money while we are at KR. The cost of maintaining the ground isn’t cheap and the low income from games because of our small capacity doesn’t cover our costs.

In attacking areas and at full back/wing back, I'm not sure we have a good enough squad to get promoted. It'd be harsh to blame the players when there are still gaps in the squad
Another forward, a creative midfielder or 2 and 2 wing backs/full backs are still required IMO. Hopefully we'll still be able to ship out about half a dozen out too because I don't know if we have enough money to get those 5 recruits if we are still stuck with some of the high earners
