What formation and system is MB looking to play?

Can’t for the life of me work it out from last night or from the signings. Wonder if he’s going to transition to a different formation at some point.

He’s undoubtedly made us more resolute defensively but I’m still not convinced what he’s trying to achieve offensively.

I don’t believe he played three at the back at Wycombe and wonder if he’ll move to four when this new left back is ready? Although playing three does lend itself to our plethora of great CBs! If we do, I’d like to see the wing backs in a more attacking role.

As for the midfield - one of Fanne and Baptiste have to feature. We need more presence and physicality.

He seems to prefer one striker up top but the attacking pair outside are going to need to get closer - both Wells and the new striker play better off people.

We simply cannot hoof ball it with the players we have.

Now that Doughty has gone (a natural LWB), the main reason for the back three now seems to be Naismith - not sure he has much experience in a central defensive two and he's not mobile enough to play left back. But he's excellent on the left or middle of a back three.

Not sure that's enough of a reason if we need bodies further up the pitch.

Why does he have to be mobile as a LB? Why can't he play LB with simple instructions to not overdo it going forwards. He can defend, he can play, he can pass. He just doesn't need to go bombing forward at every opportunity. I mean, in the short term at least.

If he is, I’d rather he plays Naismith CDM and win the midfield battle.

Although if he didn’t do that for WBA away, I doubt he ever will!!!

Agree with all of the above and been posting that on here for months.
However we haven't got another left-sided CB.
Same goes for Mengi whose best position is also CDM IMO. Another change that I can't see happening though.

Personally I hate three at the back. Only works if your wing backs are top top notch. Which is a rare occurrence at any level.
I also ask myself, which top top clubs in Europe plays three at the back? I can't think of one although I'm sure there must be one or two. But there must be a reason they don't.

Not sure why he’s sticking to it when he didn’t at Wycombe?!

I’d agree with you, it’s a rarity and strange he’s sticking with. Trying to find wingbacks who simply aren’t there. If it’s to accommodate the amount of great CBs, it’s a false economy.

I just think it leaves you short up top. Play four at the back, tell them to keep their shape and discipline. It then gives you 6 that can attack in whatever shape You want, 3-3 or 4-2, whatever. I just want to see two up top that can keep a defence occupied.

Wing backs almost always end up being the defensive sort who can barely play a forward pass.

Teams will sit off us this year and we need to get more higher up the pitch. We don't need 5 defenders. Press high and force mistakes and hope our extra potential quality pays off

Defensively we could have played five matches in a row yesterday and not conceded against AFCW, not that I think that necessarily proves a lot. I liked the look of Keeley but I think we would have kept a clean sheet even if he had watched the match from the Main Stand. Much tougher tests of the defence to come but we did look good in that sense.

Otherwise it did look a shambles to be fair.

And an occasional quality hoof shouldn't be underestimated, proper teams mix it up .
