It resembled Bloomfield’s first game against PNE, I thought. But with a slice of luck. It was never going to be a walkover, Wimbledon were well drilled in defence last season, and we are just getting started with a new team.
I thought the 1 2 between wells and Woodrow that led up to the goal was one of the only bits of quality we saw. Woodrow gets a lot of stick (unjustified IMO), but I think he’s quality at this level, and will win us a fair few points coming off the bench. Any other rival L1 club would be interested in him if we let him go.
I thought Wells movement was excellent all game, and he held the ball up remarkably well (no pun intended). Made a pleasant change from Carlton falling over every time he got the ball last year.
Not sure I understand the stick Walters is getting. Was quite anonymous first half, but something clicked and he was much more effective second half. Once he gets his confidence up, he’ll do well for us.
Clicker is so far above this level, as is Baptiste.
It was an atrocious game, but once we get into gear we’ll be absolutely fine

I was only watching on screen but the atmosphere was very quiet. You could hear the Wimbledon fans but I guess this was a big game for them. Can only put it down to the hangover from last seasons debacle. The realisation we are back in league one watching football which lacks quality. Didn’t think the players did much to lift the atmosphere either. Think it was summed up by how many who didn’t hang around after the final whistle despite the win. Think the atmosphere will improve when the team does and when we accept where we are.

Atmosphere was decent in the ground for a lot of it.
I would say it was pretty good given the previous two seasons and, I have to be honest, the appalling football that was served up.

I thought Clark was MIA in some stages of that game he isn't a right winger.
The game was dull I expected it to be a weird game but Christ it was like a friendly at times. Knew the atmosphere would drop after 20 odd min when we weren't creating anything.
I'll give it 10 games like everyone says but Christ it was boring last night worst opening day game I have ever seen across six divisions

Why are you blaming Makosso?

I definitely agree it was very similar to the PNE game.
Not quite so sure about your other points though. Walters will be a decent full back in a four or right-sided centre defender but he's a million miles off being a right wing back. Distribution was pretty poor and he looked very uncomfortable receiving the ball higher up the pitch.
Woodrow flatters to deceive. I just don't think he has the pace or physicality to play at this level.
Wells looks dangerous, particularly when he looks to get behind defenders. It was tough for him last night though with Wimbledon playing such a low block. Personally I thought we badly missed someone to hold up play as that's not his forte.

With the signing of Yates I'm not sure Woodrow will even be on the bench?
I'm also not convinced MB rates him. We had strikers who could barely score last year yet Woodrow was still sent off to Blackburn for the rest of the year.
Last night was more than a tad underwhelming but 3 points was important.

Woodrow has always been more of a deep attacker. IMO he’s a better option than Nordas to come off the bench. He did it to decent effect in the PL season.
I’m guessing Nordas might get loaned out?

You get the impression that MB`s long term plan is a striker and a deeper lying no 10
That number 10 could be Wells, Alli, Woodrow, Richards, Fanne
The number 9 will obviously be Yates as a first choice - but after that - Wells, Nordas?

That's true. Certainly something has to give as we've a fair few strikers now, especially when Brown returns and they can't all play so I would imagine 1 or 2 will leave.
Nordas shouldn't be here. He's not good enough and I don't think he ever will be to be brutally honest.
I think Woodrow has never really fitted into our system. A bit like Chong. Probably a good player in a system which suits him but I'm not sure that will ever be here now.

Nordas is a poor signing and waste of a squad place. Won't be anywhere near the team with Yates and Wells around, Then when Brown and Adebayo return he'll be even further down the pecking order. The worry for me is not be able to recoup anywhere near the (rumoured) 3-4 million we paid for him. League one again ole ole

We didn’t pay anywhere near that much for him. Was £1.5 rising to 2.5.
Still a waste of money, but you win some you lose some.

I said rumoured. If he's worth £2m then I'm worth £1m.League one again ole ole

I've heard that about Chong a few times but he has been played in a variety of positions and never stood out. There was a couple of times under Bloomfield he played as a winger but didn't do much.
I can't work out why nobody's got hold of him to build up his physique. He gets blown over by the wind.
He probably needs to go off to the Dutch league where it's far less physical.

What you’ve said about Woodrow you could literally say about any player ever to play the game who is a bit shit. It’s just an excuse for a player who isn’t good enough to shine. Nordas may not turn out to be good enough but he hasn’t had a run of games to be judged. It all just points to some really poor recruitment over time which MB has his hand full trying to unpick.

Nordas seemed to have discovered a scoring touch in pre season. I was quite surprised he didnt even make the bench to be honest - however only limited spaces there

Maybe he was caught on the phone to his agent after he found out we'd signed Yates

That's a fair analysis. There was only one team who were looking to win it and we forced the error in the end. Lots to work on but a clea sheet and 3 points is never to be sniffed at.

Agree on Walters. You’d hope a coach like Foley can help him flourish.
Think if we had a midfield 3 of either Walsh/Baptiste and then Saville and Fanne, thats as good as you’ll find. Walsh looked like one of the few to play a threatening pass.

Agreed, I thought that Walters was one of our better players last night.

Fair points all round. A team on the versus a team on the way down is always going to favour the team in the up. As they have momentum and a settled team. Luton are in the phoenix stage. Trying to build and shape a team. The Wimbledon game is just what we needed. A slap in the face and a welcome to league one football. It’s going to be brutal at times. Solid defence minded teams. Trying to nick one on the break. Luton should be much better in the away games as teams will have to play more open football than they do away from home. Too many Luton fans are stuck in cuckoo land thinking that we will piss this league as we did the championship and be promoted as champions. Not a chance. We’re going to have to work very hard for the win. Three points is a good start. We will get better as a team and progress forward only once we get rid of the entitlement badge.

Agree with this.
Compare it to the last time we played them on the opening day, when we were big favourites that time. Job done.
