The return of Edwards-ball? No midfield.

    Posted by Mr T on 1/8/2025, 22:29:23

We struggled under Edwards because, with a back 3, our midfield 2 were always outnumbered and our only “creativity” was via wing-backs - meaning Alfie, realistically.

Tonight was the same except it was even worse because we didn’t have a LWB. The Dons played much better passing football in midfield and for much of the game looked like they might have even managed to steal the game.

Savile and Walsh didn’t work because they couldn’t break the - not very sophisticated- Dons press, while Naismith and Andersen kept playing “after you”.

So our only way forward was down the right via Makosso and Walters. Predictable and not particularly successful.

Clark was wasted up front, and should have dropped back to help progress the ball.

It improved when, after 80 mins Baptiste came on - why he wasn’t starting I can’t fathom.

Hope it isn’t going to stay like that.

The ball was knocked across the back continually as there was nothing offered from Walsh and Saville, so it was then chipped over the top for 5ft Wells and 5ft Alli to try and win, which is a waste of time and not how they want it. Only had all preseason to sort out patterns of play and important stuff like that.

      League one again ole ole

Thankfully that won’t be the normal midfield.Fanne in for Walsh and drop Clarke back. Clarke place under threat once Baptiste is fit.

The most obvious weakness, is a complete lack of creativity in midfield. Barry Bannan is available owing to the current situation at Sheffield Wednesday. He would be a brilliant signing. No transfer fee involved, it's all down to wages, and we can afford it, if the board are really ambitious, and brave enough !

Your final sentence is where the issue is.
The stat that Sky TV showed tonight summed it up. They listed 9 of our signings. Only 1 cost any money. Despite all the transfer fees that have come in and the big wages that went with those players gone.
Not one passage of play tonight was inspiring. There's no flair, no creativity and not really any attacking threat. It was like last season only with a poorer squad.
          Thankfully Wimbledon are utter shite.

We've paid fees for Keeley and Yates. We will pay a fee for Richards, I think the value is yet to be determined possibly? And we may have paid loan fees for Lonwijk and Kodua. And we're not finished yet.

Sounds to me like we are signing a few players on frees, but also paying decent fees (for this level) on a couple of others.

                  A'few' players on frees????
Spent money on 2 first team players.

Like anything in life, you pay for what you get.

And last nights performance might have been good enough to scrape past a dog shit team like Wimbledon but it was no where near good enough to worry most teams in the division.

I presume the club will at some point soon tell us where all the money from transfers has gone?

Yes - it’s gone into the running of a business that has been losing money hand over fist for the last 50 years.

One season in the prem does not make up for that.

And into building a new stadium

Some things yes, but definitely not everything. Some people aee definitely out to simply rip others off left, right and centre.

Think "genuine" manufactured parts as a opposed to unbranded ones, or the disparity in fuel prices, or white "designer" labels, or replica football shirts etc.

I see 5 players signed for free (or at least no transfer/tribunal/loan fee): Naismith, Odoffin, Saville, Wells, Bramall

And 5 players definitely/likely signed for a fee (transfer/tribunal/loan): Keeley, Richards, Kodua, Lonwijk, Yates

Looking at those we have signed for free, I'm not sure many would be complaining about signing Naismith, Saville or Wells at this level? Had we needed to pay a fee for any of them, would that have made you feel better? Getting them for free is just good business and frees up more of the budget to spend elsewhere. Odoffin and Bramall, it remains to be seen how good they are of course, but just about everyone was saying that we needed to refresh the squad so that is what we have done.

Matt Bloomfield has a tough job to do. He needs to win every game while trying to find out what his strongest team is.
Knowing the best eleven early in the season is vital for success.

They did well together end of last season, but I was sure he’d start Shandon last night. And hope he does the next game. If we keep him fit he will absolutely run games in this division.
