    Replica shirts

Posted by EastEnder on 30/7/2025, 13:36:31

When did adults start wearing them to games?

From what I can remember, up until early 80s at least, they were only made/sold in kids sizes.

      What a very good question.

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

I had the iconic orange shirt with the stripe around 1975, but I was only 15. I've still got it, in fact. It doesn't fit me, but Mrs HeathHatter wore it at Wembley in 2009.

I got my first replica shirt from Pete Sports in the market, the 81/82 adidas Tricentrol shirt. Spent hours one evening picking Tricentrol off with a pair of tweezers.....

              I remember Pete's Sports!

Used to gey my football kits from there, amongst other things. I remember he used to sell the headbands like Foster used to wear and seeing loads of kids at school wearing them during the lunchtime footy!

Happy days. I don't west shirts now, not my thing anymore.

I would assume that kids that got them in the early 80s created a market for adult shirts too as they got older

I’d also guess the growth of 5 a side and 6 a side over the same time period helped the demand grow.

Of course the cool people will tell you that it’s tragic to wear a replica shirt whilst themselves wearing jacket with built in goggles

...that cost them hundreds of pounds. Also while probably wearing something fucking horrendously ugly, purely because it has a badge held on with buttons. Which also cost hundreds of pounds.
