    What grinds my gears…

Posted by Hatsworth on 29/7/2025, 11:38:00

… is someone on Facebook, the vibe on here is sometimes the same, who has said that 2020 won the lottery when we got promoted to the Premier League, and the implications is that they are now not sharing that good fortune with the people who really deserve it, the fans.

That is bullsh!t. I’ve never run a football club, not least one that was in the non-league and got to the Premier League. But what I do know with absolute certainty is that 2020 put in an enormous amount of money at their own risk, worked unbelievably hard (I’m also aware that marriages were lost and so on), the sort of effort that I personally simply could not give. There is no such thing as luck, and even if there wasn’t it.

Yes, some of the communication has been reserved, but I have also never had to manage a complete clear out of rotten playing staff from a football club relegated twice in two seasons with players on contracts that are miles and miles and miles above what place should be paid at the level those players have put us at. The way that football debt works, I would imagine that sorting out this mess is unfathomably hard. And I also believe that they will be doing it.

So yes, we got relegated twice in 2 years. It’s happened to other clubs including wolves and Sunderland. They are not crooked very very clearly, and they are doing things and taking a responsibilities for which I and always will be very grateful as merely a supporter.

So ask decent questions, perish the thought offer to actually help; but back them, or when we do next get promoted and/or we have a great time going into the new stadium, don’t come.

    Rant over.

'Clear out the rotten playing staff ' Who employed them in the first place ?!!
GS's arrogance cost us our relegation, he has become an embarrassment.

So GS should never have sanctioned the signings of Bell, Morris, Doughty, and Burke?

Pretty sure we wouldn’t have made it to the PL without them.

The OP, I think, meant that the players had gone rotten after relegation.

        You’re talking guff.

all the “problems” GS and 2020 are currently facing are self inflicted, and I have very little sympathy for anyone up there on the padded seat.

Treat your supporters like adults and with a modicum of respect and you’ll quieten the dissenters fairly rapidly. (Along with winning the odd game)

I just genuinely don’t think they could care less about the normal supporters, it’s their club we’re thicko customers who simply wouldn’t understand or be able to cope if they were actually honest and open.

Wolves and Sunderland were utter basket cases at the time. Whereas we were supposed to be ethical and well run, and in the best financial position in our history.
Last season was the most embarrassing in our history given the finances available.

I think there's two concurrent things going on

                          1. The comments on social media are getting more outlandish "Luton 2020 care more about building the stadium so they can own property around it and generate shit ton of money for themselves. Club's success is now secondary"

                          2. Fuck ups are being leapt on as conspiracy - the LL statement and WhatsApp group started after Doughty Gate - has messages in there questioning "the actions of a Non cash investor (who was gifted those shares) who is the clubs highest paying non playing employee. I think the Doughty stuff was handled terribly, but it feels link it's leaning towards getting very bitter and personal - and it's only fucking football

Exactly. 2020 have made mistakes. They're not perfect. But they are fans and working fucking hard on trying to sort the mess we're in. Sometimes that means they still get it wrong. That also doesn't mean they're not learning from the past. They have git the club's best interests at heart and anyone who can't see that is thick as pig shit.

On the constructive criticism front, a hard headed non fan in some senior capacity at the club would have helped. Looking at the facts without the emotional attachment may have seen JS and RE go sooner. Other decisions, on the Commercial side for instance, may well have been taken sooner if such a person existed.

On a general note - if you are fraying at the edges then the decision making process is often flawed. Asking for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. It's important to know your limits or have someone to tell you AND listen to them.

Agree with that too. It's like politics (maybe not a great example) but people wanting the best thing for the nation but differ as somewhat the best things are and what the priorities should be. This will go way over too many people though.

I think this is broadly fair and I get where you’re coming from. 2020 absolutely deserve huge credit for what they’ve done, nobody flukes their way from the Conference to the PL.

But the flip side is also true: you don’t get back-to-back relegations by accident. That’s not “just football” or bad luck, it’s the result of choices made (or not made), on and off the pitch.

The Wolves and Sunderland examples are valid but also important to remember they both changed ownership soon after their back to back relegations and their fans were protesting against their owners.

Obviously, I'm not calling for 2020 to go, far, far from it, they've plenty of credit in the bank and the last two seasons doesn't even come close to outweighing their achievements.

I do still think they’ll get it right again, they’ve earned the chance to. But the last few days have felt like a bit of a mess, and if there has been pressure on a journalist to change their story, then that’s just really, really fucking weird.

There are a few prize dicks about who are probably best ignored on facebook and twitter. I think most on here don't want new owners, and 100% back them whilst holding them to account. And I don’t think those two things are mutually exclusive.

                                              Re: What grinds my gears…
