    Remaining Positive

Posted by Letchworth Hatter on 28/7/2025, 20:40:58

Bloomfield has got us looking far fitter and more organised than we have been in ages. An unbeaten pre season is really positive.

I think Keeley is going to be one hell of a signing. His distribution looks excellent.

Saville and Naismith are the warriors and leaders we've been missing.

I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned much on here - probably not to tempt fate - but a fit Baptiste will run games in League One.

Alli and Wells will cause havoc.

in Makosso, Fanne, Nelson, Richards, Johnson, Luker, Harris and Phillips we have a crop of very promising under 21s.

We knew that we were going to lose players - and there haven't been any real surprises yet.

The injuries have been mainly to those we thought might be off or were already injured.

All we need is a striker and a LWB and we are good to go.

    Keeley

    Walters
    Makosso
    Andersen
    Naismith
    Lonwijk

    Baptise
    Saville
    Clark

    Alli
    Wells

Easily good enough to win on Friday.

Agree with a lot of what you are saying but there are glaring holes in the squad as well.

Positives being you can see a strong spine forming, Keeley, Makosso, Anderson, Naismith, Saville. Fitness levels seem higher and there does feel like a structure to how we play.

      but

We have only one specialist FB in the squad and he has only played a handful of games, yes we do have a whole number of stop gaps but that is all they are stop gaps. (appreciate there are still a few weeks to address this)

Center midfield seems to be revolving around a two picked from Saville, Baptiste and Walsh. If fit and available then there probably isnt a better midfield two in this league but unfortunately two of those three have struggled badly to play any number of games over the last few seasons.

      Up front is well documented.

It feels like a strong 11 at first but I do question the quality in depth especially as the seasons goes on.

We as fans need to be careful not to underestimate L1, the attitude is reminding me a little of last season and even our first couple of seasons in the conference. I cant actually remember the last time (or if we ever have done) we bounced straight back from a relegation.

Agreed. Hard to be positive after the last couple of seasons, but objectively, we still have a very strong squad for the level. Our depth at CB is ludicrous for L1, to be honest.

I think if we have a strong start to the season (and the fixture list is quite kind in assisting that), the feelgood factor will return and we'll have a very strong season.

Personally I think we will go up and I think there's a decent chance we turn out to be the best team in the league by quite some way. But the start of the season is going to be critical.

My worry is we're notoriously slow starters, and if that happens this season, there isn't the goodwill or patience from the fans, and the season will be a toxic mess.

I think the squad is one striker and left back away from being very strong. But we've seen what happens when the crowd turns: Players who were performing wonders in the PL suddenly look like Vanorama also rans.

Yeah that is the worry. But we do need to remember that for last 20% of last season we were performing at a level way above Championship relegation. New season, new players, but I am cautiously optimistic that Bloomfield has successfully instigated a "no dickheads" policy at the club.

Wimbledon and Posh are two of the favourites for relegation and Bradford are newly-promoted. I'm not saying it will happen, but 7/9 points from the first three games is achievable.

Of course if we lose (or even draw) on Friday all HELL will break loose...

It is easy to forget, because of the WBA debacle, that we were in the top 3 form teams prior to that. So I do agree that there's cause for optimism. I've just seen too many times what happens when the crowd turn, no matter how good the side is. I don't think anyone but John Still could've navigated the start to our conference promotion season in the way he did. Any other manager and it probably would've been another depressing season in the conference.

Lets hope the players block out all the noise and are merciless on Friday night.

Well said. I think we will put our hands in our picket and produce a decent striker. Overall no one’s left who I didn’t expect to leave.mWe heeded a complete overhaul after the last 2 season and Marty’s done a decent job so far.

More to leave and more to join the squad yet. I worry some on here may combust...

Our recruitment, fitness and squad spine is 100 times better than last summer.

Agree with you, we are a LWB and striker away from being the real deal. I think we will bring in two left sided players and a forward. It looks like MB is building a squad that can play 3 or 4 at the back. Chong and Marv to go by the deadline and only reason Mengi stays is if serious injury.

              LWB or RWB?
At LWB we have JJ, Londwik and potentially Alli
at RWB Jones and Walters, possibly Londwik if he can play either side

2 footed fullback and a striker then!

If we play Ali at LWB we will have one of the slowest attacks in the league. At all costs we got to not get into that mess like last year and keep Ali forward. He's way to dangerous to be doing any defending! We need two left sided players and a quick powerful forward. COYH

Compare the team that got promoted from league one last time. There is a lot of work still to do, the squad we have right now still has several gaps in key positions.

Hopefully not but seems like we have made some of the same mistakes again in terms of squad rotation. An injury to Alli and how much of a threat do we look?

No point in comparing the two we started the season last time with a core of players that had just got promoted and ditto the Manager, you can't just put together a team like that over one Summer, well I guess BFJ did but that was a league lower.

TBF Joes team only really clicked great when JLV signed and I think if I remember it right, JLV signed quite late in that window?

I’d like two strikers in and ‘hide’ Alli for a few weeks.

Else he plays a more attacking role and if he does well it creates another problem.

Also the cup game at Coventry, we already have a number of injuries and we can ill afford to have to play our first XI there and risk more.

You basically don't want Alli to play well so that he doesn't draw attention to himself? If all our players did that, we'd be in trouble...

If he is clearly our best attacker in the month of August and he gets 4-5 goals then we likely have a problem.

Sign a forward to share the burden, a Yates, a Jatta etc then it’s less obvious.

Wall to wall TV games in League 1 is a shop window and we are on three? times live in August already.

No, you are not right that if Alli scores 4-5 goals in the first month of the season in which 3 of our games are televised that ‘we have a problem’ that could be avoided if he only scored 3-4 and scouts had to watch him in person or on the itv highlights.
