    Luton & Spending Money

Posted by Nas on 27/7/2025, 8:40:47

Only in the last couple of years have we had serious money to spend.

Before that we were always a selling club when half decent money came in for ours.

The fact remains is that we seem not know how to spend on players.

Anyone we have spent money one has hardly set the world on fire.

McGuinness for one 10m was it Jury is still out for me on him.

We didn’t get rid of some after the premiership season and now off loading for not as much money.

Our transfers in and out have been poor and untimely.

I think it was Notorious who said on here are recruitment has only ever been good when we've a manager who is good at it. Someone like Still who knew the conference inside out and Jones who had an extensive list of players.

I think it's quite clear Rob didn't have that knowledge.

Hopefully Matt does. Otherwise I do worry about what happens when it's left to Jay's spreadsheets.

It was indeed me, good memory 😀!

Based purely on our transfer windows under 2020’s tenure; outside of Nathan Jones and JS (conference), our recruitment has largely been poor.

As you say, I hope Bloomfield knows what he’s doing, otherwise we’re in for further struggles..

I disagree. I think the squad we had under Harford/Money the first season or two in the conference was more than good enough, with some very decent signings for that level. Buckle’s tenure, agreed. Graeme Jones, ditto. But RE’s first transfer window was good. As was a few of the signings in jan and i like the business done this summer, as long as we get a striker in.

How many of the signings under Harford and Money went on to play higher than the conference consistently? That tells you all you need to know..

Brabin, poor recruitment. Buckle poor recruitment. Graeme Jones poor, Edwards piss poor.

January was reasonable considering the league position we were in; although that was under Bloomfield. The signings this summer have been decent, but I think we’re two forwards away from being genuine contenders. Woodrow and Nordas won’t cut it.

So the odd window aside, in nearly 20 years under 2020, we’ve only had consistently good recruitment under 2 managers, NJ and JS. Hence why I said, I hope Bloomfield has more pull in the market..

It's all data driven now isn't it?

If all the clubs looking for players are using the same (or very nearly) data, then it seems obvious the 'better' players will be snapped up first (money talks) leaving a pool of average ones sat waiting for the best offer they can get.

We're League one now, not a 'big attraction' to many, and will end up with those who failed to get an offer from the 'bigger' clubs at the end of the window.

It's getting like Ebay, buy it now or put a silly offer in and hope

No point picking over the past, the unexpected step up to the prem caught us out, but the money is the win. Sure we’ve had some bums in last few windows, it’s being resolved. McGuinness was £6m and isn’t the problem in our squad. I hope we solve our wide play…

You’re not concerned where goals are coming from? Or is that connected to wide play?

I’m certainly not convinced where goals are coming from, though from what I’ve seen so far I don’t think we’re going to need to score many to win games. An all around speedy CF (Kone would have been perfect but looks like that bird has flown) and an attacking LWB to replace the clearly departing Doughty and we’re good to go. The two we really need to keep hold of are Makosso and Alli

McGuinness was £6m, not £10m. The £10m was a “rising to,” which doesn’t apply.

As has been said many times, McGuinness was nowhere near £10m. No more than £6m up front (you can argue that even that was too much, but it wasn’t 10).

                    Come on England

In 40 yrs of following we have always sold and I think we will always do the same, prudence has imo been a byword for 2020, recruitment appears tough and clubs will try take advantage of our prem windfall.
My only issue is relegation clauses and letting players go for a minimal amount, although some of them who've gone won't be missed.
We've signed 8? And maybe 1 or 2 to come hopefully, Bloomfield putting his stamp on things

                      I just don't worry about these things.Seen a lot in 51 years.
                      Why worry now.

Pre Internet these paranoid rants about we need this need that never exsisted. Why can't we sign a new striker.Lots of questions none can answer only the club can.I trust the club on these matters

I trust the professionals to do the job .

If they fail we get another bunch in .
