    RIP Cleo Laine

At 97, she had a great innings.

She was a wonderful singer and an inspiring person.
Over the years, I always enjoyed listening to her, usually supported by the band of her husband, Johnny Dankworth (who was also a superb musician until his death aged 82 in 2010).

I used to volunteer behind the bar at the original Stables on Friday nights and my lovely mum used to look after the Dankworth’s and their musicians before and after the shows. Fantastic music and they were both decent people. I remember their son Alex’s first ever set on the double bass, he must have only been about 12/13 years old.

The original stables was far more intimate, like a proper Jazz club in those days. Cleo would occasionally just get up and do a couple of numbers with the band.

I feel very lucky to have experienced that at age 18.

      RIP Cleo

The Stables is still a great venue although has suffered with Milton Keynes creeping and residents complaining.
