Frees implies and seem to be accepted by many as lack of spending. However, it usually involves a fee paid to the player instead of his old club. It’s why they are free… get the money themselves instead of it going to the club they left.

The fact that a player doesn't command a transfer fee can often indicate an issue with them. Understandable that free transfers are looked at with some scepticism given some of the donkeys we've brought in recently

If they're given away while still under contract, possibly.
Otherwise, we're talking in terms of players who are out of contract and thus free-transfers who get a signing on bonus. This is especially the case where a player deliberately runs their contract down thus saving their new club having to shell out a transfer fee.

I kind of agree as some fees will undoubtedly be exchanged, but that feels a little disingenuous.
I don't think that a free transfer of a player ostensibly worth, say, £2 Million if still in contract, means that the player gets £2 Million.

It certainly means he will get a wedge. Probably the club and the player both gain a million in that case. Who knows? It’s undisclosed! 😂

Do you really think it works like that?
Maybe you're right, I don't really know.
Funny old game innit?

Players used to get 10% of the transfer fee if they never asked for a move, half on the transfer and the rest on retirement. But I should imagine that is now old hat
