    Doughty/Mengi/Chong

Posted by Newton on 23/7/2025, 10:52:49

Obviously quite a few weeks to go until the transfer window closes, but I am slightly surprised that all three of the above are still with us.

Personally I'd be over the moon if we kept Doughty. He was one of our best players in the PL, and I reckon if he hadn't missed three months towards the end of the season, we'd have got the extra point which would have kept us up. He's a better LWB than LB, but at L1 level he should be good enough to play at LB. Interesting that he was captain for at least some of last night's game - not a move you'd likely make if he was definitely on his way out.

Mengi and Chong I am less bothered by. Mengi is clearly talented but his attitude is... questionable. His injury last night might mean he won't move until January at earliest.

Chong is an interesting one. Again, clearly talented and there are games he looks at least Championship quality. However, there are too many games where he goes missing, and I do wonder how up for a 46 game slog in L1 he would be.

Personally, I'd sell Chong and Mengi, if we can get good money, and do all we can to keep Doughty. It may not be possible to keep him, but he should be the priority.

Yep pretty much agree with all that.
Personally gutted we lost assgard , kaminski & Morris but seem we have a decent replacement for Kaminski.
Interesting think we lost @ £2m on kaminski which is unusual for us.

Bloomfield has said the same about all three - they all make us better and he would be happy to work with them, but accepts that good bids may come in because of their Premier League history.

So none are out of the picture completely but it's still likely they'll leave.

Nakamba though... No sign of him. I don't know if he's been present at preseason at all.

Not sure Chong is 'an interesting one', its very difficult to build a case for him contributing anything in future.

would be ideal for French Ligue 1 mid table team based south of Lyon - a gentle kick about in warm sun

Agreed, as long as there's no coastal breeze to blow him over.

Don't forget that Doughty signed a new contract just before Christmas, when we were already in relegation trouble, not normally the action of someone who wants to leave.

As we saw with Aasgaard , don’t mean a thing. Everyone in football is for sale for the right price.

Depends on what the small print of the contract had in it.

Yeah, I imagine renowned skinflint Sweaty probably accidentally agreed to a £5 release clause, FFS.

                    Let's hope so.
I can see Doughty doing a decent job for us in division 3.

And no cunt is going to pay £5m for him.

                    Bravo Sweet.

"I am slightly surprised that all three of the above are still with us."

All three have been injured and are attempting to gain match fitness to either get in the team or pass a medical to transfer.

True. But that wouldn't necessarily stop clubs bidding for them.

As I say, I think Chong and Mengi will leave. I'm more intrigued by Doughty being captain last night, plus as someone else has said, he signed a new contract in January, so maybe he will stay.

Agree with that. Hopefully a Championship club with more money than sense will take a punt on Chong.

Personally, I think he is more suited to the European leagues where it's less physical.
