Don’t know about lauded but Alex Turner and Neil Tennant they both do talk singing and it’s shite . Love Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah though !

Iris DeMent is one that gets me. Her version of ‘Let the Mystery Be’, from the Transatlantic Sessions, first grated on me. As do other songs she’s made. Age has made me appreciate her talent.

I came across "Our Town" first and like you say, I grew to like her. I saw her at Shepherd's Bush Empire - Jim Broadbent was there too.
