Derby paid just £500K for Morris?

    Posted by E5 Hat on 22/7/2025, 16:32:58

Heard yesterday on the trust podcast Carlton was allowed to join Derby for just £500K. Part of signing new contract required him getting a relegation clause written into his contract. Not quite the Captain who runs through walls for Luton as portrayed...

So a relegation clause gave him quite an incentive to not try his best knowing he could get a cheapo move back to the Championship and an improved salary due to the reduced fee. Sounds like a really clever move, for the player that is.

Yes, all of this probably happened exactly as you've inferred. You know despite someone, actually reliable, who actually knows someone reliable at Derby who says otherwise as stated on this thread.

The Derby supporters group lead is part of a Fair Game group I'm involved with and he certainly reckoned a lot more than that.

Yes correct...I've since learned that due to the way he treated others on occasions, many of the playing staff were glad to see him go, and morale is considerably better now as a result.
No idea if that's part of the reason he was sold, just to be clear

Wish Carlton nothing but the best. He was brilliant for us . Gave everything. I just hope some of these signings we're making now have some of his character. I think they do and can't wait to see them in action. I think this is going to be a really good season for us.

I don’t understand this. He signed a contract extension June 2023 which according to the club secured his long term future. The relegation clause would be from the PL to the Championship surely?
Anyway a very good player for us during his time here but players come and go. We move on.

Maybe that was part of the attraction of the deal, not paying up that contract . . .

It’s very odd this deal, I guess the boar£ felt they had. Jo choice.

in terms of his performances i think you just have missed him last season, he was woeful and a shocking captain.

Why are people sooo negative about everything.

He was good for us, why not just wish him well?

He was good for us for several seasons. Last season he was poor.

It’s negative as we have some on here totting up transfer revenues of £8m in this summer with Carlton going for £2.5m then moan our board aren’t spending all this bounty.

It’s also double standards on the one hand some say fair play it’s business he’s looking our for number one, then it’s but you mustn’t moan about him…

TBH the board are responsible for the fee we received. Down to them if it was good business.

And he also SCORED one entire goal this calendar year! The ”running his socks off” I don’t know… To me he looked quite stationary this season.
