Formation

Looks like we're setting up with 3 at the back / wing back system again.
I assume that MB thinks that best suits the players we have. Especially all the centre backs on the books.

Does appear so right now, big concern is hope that doesn’t mean Ali at LWB and our midfield without Baptiste is not creative enough and we know his injury record means he won’t play 30+ games.
It’s hard for MB right now as there are a number of players he will expect to leave over coming weeks and some like Assgaard aren’t easy to replace.

I thought we had greater control with Baptiste but, particularly once Doughty came on, we had some decent attacking play.
It was a nominal three, I thought, a bit lop-sided. NL played more like an old-school fullback. He was certainly wider than CM, allowing Alli to start further forward. Of course that could just be because Gillingham offered absolutely nothing down their right.

Yep, the lopsided issue has been a problem since last summer. If we can get the WB positions sorted then for me we have the makings of a great team.

I don't know that it necessarily needs to be a problem, unless our opposition have a particularly strong right side.
We get the same with Doughty there, we just need Walters to get his mojo, fully, back or Jones to come back firing.

Making the assumption Alfie is soon fit and gone, JJ and Ali at LWB will see us face same issues as last season with Chong there.
JJ I like but he needs bit more time around the team learning. Ali is a forward…

Aside from a proper LWB I think we must have the strongest back 8 in the division. Even if players leave like Mengi, McGuinness, Fanne, Holmes and Andersen leave we have fantastic depth there.
It's the front three where we still look light, particularly if Bloomfield persists with a 5221 rather than 532. I don't think we've got anyone good enough to play as the lone striker.

Baptiste has actually looked fine all pre-season. He doesn't look any less fit than anyone else.

Agreed. Baptiste has look very fit. Also I thought Alli caused more damage at wingback than he did when he was pushed further forward

Started getting caught out a bit defensively.
He could do a job there if we're dominating teams but I wouldn't want him there against anyone decent

Thankfully we're not playing anyone decent this season.

I wouldn't go as far as saying he looks "very fit".
He looks like he's on track for a solid season.
I do fear for Izzy Jones... that injury can really bog someone down for a very long time.
