    Holibods- Hope Valley

Posted by Bilko on 17/7/2025, 14:21:14

Have had the good fortune to revisit the Hope Valley. Camping at Edale.
First day back a bit sore so got the train to Manchester.
Had a great time wandering about, and visited the Peveril of the Peak (sp), first time in over 30 years.
Next day it was pissing down so went to Sheffield again a lovely place.
Rest of the time has been walking, what a fantastic country we live in.
    Brilliant views, walks and people.

Love that part of England camped at Laneside Camp site Hope and the site up near the Nags head pub Edale. My wife and I also had an extended Holiday in Hope getting jobs in Castleton.
Nearly got lost on Kinder Scout when mist and fog came down scarry!

        +1

Fuck going abroad. Too much stress and hassle when we have hills, valleys, lakes, rugged countryside, beaches, cliffs, wetland flats, forests, moorlands and everything else within our country borders. We're bloody lucky living in such a gorgeous and diverse country although there are far too many happy to fuck it up with littering, fly tipping, leaving dog shit everywhere etc.

Some of my favourite places over that way.
A top quality Sunday roast has been enjoyed a few times at The Ramblers Inn at Edale after a day's walking/hiking.

Meet a couple of lads from Bedfordshire Hertfordshire border in the Rambler.
            One Luton the other Watford.
Fun was had for a few hours.

            That all sounds fabulous Bilko.

Have you done the Mam Tor or Win Hill walks?

Sheffield takes some beating for pubs too, especially if you like ones like the Pev. Did you go to the nearby Briton's Protection?

Avoiding the main walks like Mam Tor and Win Hill as lots of Duke of Edinburgh around.
Don't want to sound snobbish there is room for all of us. Last night the camp site was full of youngsters enjoying themselves.
Didn't know about the Briton's and just looked it up.
On my to do list, however as it took me 37 years to get back to the Pev so it might be a while.

With the lack of respect Manchester has for its old pubs (and buildings) you may have missed your chance! The city centre is great for bars but not so much for traditional pubs. Sheffield better for that....and Liverpool, by a country mile (though not the 'done thing' to say that here!)

Reason I mentioned those two walks is having got paid to research and write up a series of walks in and around Manchester a good few years back. Getting paid for that - brilliant!

I know I was only in both places for a day each but felt Manchester was trying to hard to be a big place.
Obviously a lot bigger than Sheffield but to me it was struggling for an identity.
In no way am I doing it down, just didn't feel the vibe when I was there.

Getting paid for promoting walks fantastic, give me a shout next time.

You have absolutely hit the nail on the head there re Manchester. Spot on. It tries to be a London, when it isn't in any shape or form, with projects like the (crap) Aviva studios like a poor mans Tate Modern. It is losing its signature red brick to glass and steel, and it has no respect for its own history. The 'Northern Quarter' (hate that title) was promoted as being like Barcelona. Is it fuck!

I loved the place up to about 20 years ago, but it's lost it. Whereas Sheffield is warm and welcoming and has no airs and graces.

A friend of mine, from Liverpool (which is absolutely buzzing), says his city is happy to be itself and doesn't give a toss what the rest of the world thinks, whereas Manchester seems desperate to impress.

                    I'd say he's right.
