I think they were simply involved in advising who to appoint as Manager, and came up with John Still (East End connection).

That definitely fits. I was introduced to Billy Jennings in a pub with the 2020 bods after we beat Alfreton 5 nil. My Manc mates came to the game and couldn't believe that the directors popped in (as they did and still do at nearly every away game, but before not after matches now)
