      I had forgotten how poor the pitches were then. A beach up the middle and a quagmire on the flanks.

      The current crop of prima donnas need to look at this when they complain about a ground with too much grass.

        The poor state of pitches from when football was invented in 1871 meant that for decades Inside and outside rights and lefts worked as a pair on the wings where there was grass.

            I'd forgotten all about that save. Thanks for posting it. As for pitches, I ran on when John O'Rourke scored against Chesterfield and the mud came up to my ankles. Cue a right bollocking from my Mum when I got home.
