    Squad changes so far

Posted by Garstang Hatter on 9/7/2025, 13:55:39

Out: Bell, Krul, Horlick, Moses (all out of contract), Bowler (end of loan), Kaminski, Hashi, Morris, Aasgaard, Burke (all sold).

Neutral overall: Pelly, Pereira (both returned from loan, then out of contract), Pepple (returned from loan, then sold), Naismith (end of loan, then signed on a free), Lockyer (out of contract but remains at the club).

In: Walton, Woodrow, Holmes, Luker, Lynch (all returned from loan), Saville (signed on a free), Richards (signed with fee TBC by tribunal).

Bell & Burke probably need replacing with 1 regularly fit CB, especially if we switch to 4 at the back - this could be Holmes returning from loan.

Krul & Horlick probably need replacing with 1 backup goalkeeper, and Kaminsky with a first choice goalkeeper - Walton returning from loan could be one of these, but we don't know which yet.

Moses, Bowler and Hashi barely played and won't be missed, but we do need to have sufficient numbers - but on the other hand we have got Woodrow, Saville & Richards added to the squad (plus a couple of youngsters).

Aasgaard and Morris still need to be replaced, along with 1 goalkeeper. If we can do that, and then just replace any further outgoings, then I think we'll be alright.

Literally the fifth time I've completely forgotten about Bowler!

It's all a bit quiet in terms of 'ins' though, innit?

            Yup.

Exit door almost falling off it's hinges.
Entry door with cobwebs on it.

I am sure there is activity going on 'behind the scenes' but it's beginning to feel silent rather than quiet in terms of 'ins'.

We all know that there needs to be plenty moved on, and for good reasons. And they are.

But all the 'outs' and no 'ins' is starting to give off bad vibes.

No suprise a lot are getting jittery.

Surely, surely, something positive happens soon?

F'ing PL was a poisoned chalice I reckon.

                Always sound advice.

Thinking that a 17 year old is not going to play as a LB, RB and a Striker all at once though.

So hopefully we get bodies in to fill those spots soon.

I reckon we’ll see a couple in over the next few days. The club have to be aware we can’t have so many outgoings without a few coming in.

I’m not worried just yet. I reckon some of the youth will get a crack this season too. Phillips seems heavily involved in the pre-season drills and content.

His contract negotiations took longer than the others too.

Could suggest he was looking for a guarantee of playing time if other parties were interested.

Yes, perfect sense thanks. Basically, all the wailing and gnashing of teeth about how many players have left doesn't really stand up to a simple analysis. Half of those who have left were not first team players, a couple who would have been regulars had a few injuries, and we've got some decent players (for this level) back from their loan spells away. I don't think we need to worry about quantity of signings, just a couple of quality ones will do me (depending on other departures, of course).

                  “Some decent players….back from loan”

                  Do we?

If you are seriously thinking that about Woodrow?

Otherwise, Pepple and Pelly have gone.

The only other EFL loan was Luker, who is unproven even at League 2 level.

In addition Lynch and couple more from Step 3, so unfair to expect too much too soon.

I am still positive based on the assertions made last night that we have a significant transfer budget.

You (presumably intentionally) missed out part of that sentence - "we've got some decent players (for this level) back from their loan spells away."

Woodrow, Walton and Holmes would all be decent squad players in League One, in my opinion. Maybe not all in the Championship, but there is a sizeable gap between the leagues.

                      Sorry I missed Walton.

                      That’s where it ends though.

“Decent” is not good enough for a team that needs to get promotion.

We need the best quality of player we can get for this level.

Woodrow and Holmes were both rejected by the manager in January and nothing should change about that judgement.

Decent is surely enough for a squad player? They can't all be first choice, can they? I did say that we still need to replace Morris and Aasgaard (i.e. first teamers needing to be replaced with first teamers) and potentially Kaminsky depending on how Walton is viewed. But for some of the rarely-used squad players who have left, the likes of Woodrow and Holmes would be fine to take their places.

                            Exactly this.

Promotion winning squads have quality in all areas, competing for places. Decent just isn’t good enough.
