Being tipped as clear favourites for Champions of L1

Posted by Melbourne Hat on 9/7/2025, 7:50:08

    Keep reading and seeing this.

Last season came as a surprise to absolutely nobody that Birmingham and Wrexham did the job.

This season? No way we are doing a Birmingham. I just don't see it as that clear cut right now.

Anyone else uneasy with the 'clear favourites' tag?

Seem to remember we were one of the favourites to go UP last season. That went well.

I think that for the first time 2020 have started to come under pressure for presiding over the last 18 months or so horror show. Our budget for a 3rd tier team is almost certainly massive ( especially if all the higher paid players we want offloading are offloaded. I am certain they will not want a continuation of the last 18 months so am pretty confident we will eventually have an excellent transfer window.

Added to the above, once Bloomfield got his squad fitter and more organized he managed to turn round our fortunes. Our form towards the end of the season was nearer that of promotion rather than relegation. Therefore, anything less than promotion will be a massive failure

Considering how we've folded under even the slightest of pressure - particularly last season - us being favorite's us a bad thing.

Hopefully MB can get into the team to ignore the noise and just get on with the job

Bookies' odds are based on bets placed - many punters will see us as favourites due to the parachute payments. Initial odds would have been based on bookies' expectations of who people would back.

I’m not uneasy with it, bookies can do what they want. But I’ve seen nothing whatsoever since relegation to suggest were coming straight back up.

Exactly this, we may be getting rid of some of the over paid under performing lot, but are very much stuck with many still (and not even the remotely good ones)

We are weaker following these departures, and though there is plenty of time to bring in reinforcements, currently we are not close to doing a brum.

But I couldn't really care less about doing a brum. What I want to see is actually signs of a change in mentality. We were starting to get that towards the end of last season (any coincidence that that occured whilst Adebayo and Doughty were sidelined?) probably ironically kick-started by the very flukey win at Hull. Still can't believe we won that, not just the freak o.g. but we had nothing about us at all that day to suggest we deserved it.

It took MB a while to really get to grips with what we have and now having a transfer window to start make the team his own it'll be interesting how this shapes up. Despite all hatters1988 and Earls have posted, we do have, on paper, the strongest squad in the division with many players with PL experience. Unfortunately, football matches aren't played on paper! But there's no reason to suggest we shouldn't be in the mix this season. In fact I very much hope and expect us to be so.

Doing a Brum and pissing the league would be a fairly big sign of a change in mentality.

Bloomfield is a good fit. The signs seem to be that the expected players are leaving - Nakamba, Doughty, Chong.
But as it stands, while the three incomings look good, Bloomfield hasn’t been able to do nearly enough to get a squad ready for the new season.
We might not be signing the injury-prone deadwood like recent windows, but we’re otherwise repeating the mistakes of not getting enough incomings sorted with any sense of urgency.
In the mix? Maybe. Top two? I’m not seeing it so far.

I get the calls for realism and positivity. I really do. But at some point, you need to see something from the club to justify that optimism. Right now, it just all feels a bit meh. That can change quickly with a few decent signings, of course, and I hope it does, but we really need to see that over the next few weeks and not be pissing about towards the end of August again.

Also, I’m really hoping Matt can bring to the table what Still and Jones did, a clear vision of the type of players he wants, based on proper football knowledge and understanding of what’s needed to build a successful team. That personal insight and conviction in recruitment was a massive part of our success before. And I don't think it's coincidence recruitment has been a bit shite overall since Jones left.

If we’re leaving it all to Jay Soycik and his Football Manager spreadsheets, I honestly think we’re in trouble.

I appreciate there's a lot of context missing right now, but if we're well off the pace and finish mid table, I think that's wholly inexcusable and the entire recruitment team needs booting into touch and we need a DoF in place. You can't persist with a recruitment structure which starts with a very good Championship side, goes into the Prem, spends over £100m in fees and wages in two seasons to end up mid table in League One. That's inexcusable and incompetent.

I’m pretty sure Bloomfield knows what he wants, and that it’ll be players with the right attitude. My concern is whether he’ll get backing to recruit them before the season starts, or whether we start it in a similar fashion to the home game v Burnley. (Granted, we seem to have finally got an emptier treatment room.)
