    State of the squad

Posted by Letchworth Hatter on 5/7/2025, 18:40:41

With just under 4 weeks before the start of the season I think we are only a LWB and ST away from having a competitive match day squad for League One - providing we can hold on to all the lads that played for us today (I'm not including Mengi).

    Walton

    Jones
    Makosso
    McGuinness
    Naismith
    LWB

    Saville
    Walsh
    Clark

    Alli
    ST

Subs: Shea, Walters, Fanne, Nelson, Baptiste, Nordas, Woodrow

We also have Richards and all our promising U21's, possibly Andersen, and Brown to come back from injury.

This would be a bare minimum - I'd like to see some more signings - but I think it makes for fairly encouraging reading, and I am no 'happy clapper'.

MB's comments about Doughty don't sound like talking about someone who is about to leave. I would still be surprised to see him here in September but....

I would be amazed. He's too good for League One.

I think we are just keeping Doughty and Mengi fit to protect our major assets whilst we negotiate hard over the next few weeks with a few suiters.

I would think that with the older lads like Carlton and Kaminski once a bid came in that matched our valuation we were happy to move quickly to get them out and the wage bill down.

'Competitive', that's what we should have been last season. Anything less than promotion will be a 3rd season of failure.

I agree, it will be a failure.

But right now I don't think we are in as bad a position as some people on this board seem to think.

We appear to have shifted quite a few, I think Saville and Naismith were smart signings and Richards could be exciting.

However, we definitely need a LWB and ST to have a balanced and competitive squad.

Anything that we then add to that, which I hope and expect we do, will make winning the league that much easier.

I'm hoping there will be at least 5/6 additions to that squad.

Ageing midfield who are bound to pick up injuries. We need at least two more strikers. Not sure if Alli is an out and out striker.

Even if Elijah is registered we would only have 13 positions taken in the 22 man squad (both goalkeepers and U21s not counted this season).

Gives us the opportunity to sign up to 9 more - although obviously some of our U21s like Makosso, Fanne and Nelson are easily good enough.

Richards seems a skillful player but predominantly a tough tackling midfielder he's played 2 seasons in league 1 already
