    Tim Krul criticising players’ attitudes

Posted by Earls on 29/6/2025, 17:27:45

I can’t be fussed listening to the whole thing, but an ad for The Cycling GK podcast just got put into my Facebook timeline, for an episode with Tim Krul.
In it, Krul explains how the squad thought we’d go straight back up and that they believed they were too good to go down, which was a contributor of our relegation.
Krul is hardly saying anything we don’t already know, but is this the first time any of the players have said it publicly?

Just saw the clip too. Bit rich coming from Krul, to be honest.

If the squad thought they were too good to go down, you'd hope the senior pros would challenge that — not just go along with it. Krul was meant to be one of the experienced heads, a Dutch international who had been in World Cup squads but he just came here, played shite when selected and took his 20k a month and coasted.

Fair enough, maybe it’s not all on one player. But if you’re brought in for leadership and your experience and off the field presence and influence, there’s some responsibility to step up if everything burns around you. Saying it now, on a podcast, doesn’t really do much — would’ve meant more if he’d said it when it actually mattered.

Cheers for absolutely fuck all Tim. You useless cunt. Might as well have paid a clapping seal to sit on the bench the last two years.

Rant over. I'm off to water the plants.

Why would players who believe they’re too good for the Championship listen to a reserve goalkeeper? It’s the manager’s job, and the captain’s, to light a fire under lazy players.

Yeah, I get that. I'm not putting it all on Krul of course, it definitely comes from the top down from the manager and the captain.

But he also wasn't just an academy backup, he had loads of experience, saving penalties in a World Cup QF shootout etc. He was clearly brought in to be a presence in the dressing room. If he saw a complacent culture taking place, and you've been around long enough as a pro, surely you've got a responsibility to speak up?

Too many people last year avoided any sort of responsibility on the playing side. Just an all around collective failure.

And all we got from Tim Krul was an absolute shite performance away at Exeter and a podcast post mortem.

(And in my OP I meant to say 20k a week. Not a month! We might as well have kept Walton on the bench then pay Krul that sort of cash over the last two years!)

How do you know Tim Krul didn't have a word with them and told them to buck their ideas up. Could be he did and they all thought they were Billy Big Bollocks and ignored him.

          Ha!!

          Think you've nailed it there.

The togetherness and leaders/experienced players stepping up was the cornerstone of our success going through the leagues.

That didn't happen the last 18 months. We'll never know why. Could be money got to them(no Billy Big bollocks) could be they saw Edwards as an easy touch. Could be other things.

Morris ran his bollocks of but wasn't captain material IMO. he only got the gig as he was Lockyers best mate.

I'd love a team of horrible cunts with a few young, fast attacking players next season.
The first 2 signings look promising for that.

            Yeah, exactly!

TBF, the signings of Saville and Kal perm are promising.

But, I do worry that we're not quite clear as to what went wrong. It wasn't just a blip, it was way more than that. It's not like we finished mid table.

It’s not just about bouncing back with a tweak here and there — last season felt like something deeper was broken and our entire playing DNA vanished. That's really hard to just rediscover in a window. Im concerned we’ve underestimated how much of a rebuild is actually required.

Fingers crossed the next few weeks show we’ve learned something with a few decent signings.

Saville certainly fills those boots, a nasty bugger if he plays for the opponents but a grafter if he plays for us.

            Probably.
After Doughtys comments early this calender year about us not going down, perhaps Sweet should have saved his No Billy Big bollocks for those in the changing room instead of directing it at the supporters that were anything but....
