      Such a sad story.

Every time I read one of your posts, I find myself thinking places like 66 Reginald Street should have a little blue plaque for people like Sammy Wightman, though if we did that, half the town would be covered in them!

Also interesting how often Bute Street station pops up in these older stories, almost like it was the station of choice in town and now it’s completely gone. An old relative of mine once told me when his mother first came to Luton she went to get off at Luton Hoo station, thinking that was the main railway station before the town, before being told she had to wait for the next stop! Shows how much things change.

The Blue Plaques are OK in theory but everyone has a different idea of what the qualification should be..... I wont mention the mysterious wokey pokey clan.

Yes, good point on the station. Bute Street Station was the first station in Luton and opened up the hat trade to the world. They not only accomodated the hat industry, they establised stables for deliveries (modern day Evri). Also Bute Street was an important east/west route linking the East Coast and West Coast mainlines.

Indeed. It would have been quite a handy link these days were it still around.

There is quite a good series on youtube with two chaps walking the old railway line from Leighton to Welwyn and talking about its history etc.

Quite heavy on the railway history side of things, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. TBH, anything related to the history of Luton fascinates me.

There's quite a few of them! They've been doing them for 3 years or so and they've only just made it past Wheathampstead.

What a sad story about Sammy Wightman, thanks for the link RADSB.

The media wasn’t such a beast in those days.. imagine if that happened today? At least there’d be TV footage as evidence.

I’m sure we have lost other players in their prime over the years, including in two world wars, but surely there’s room for a Sammy Wightman something at PC… bar, kiosk, section of seating if not a whole stand.

The crucial part of the saga which makes it even more tragic, was the two Brighton doctors saying to get him home. Having travelled through London to get back to Luton, local dcotors were unable to help so they then called for a specialist London doctor who arrived too late.

Sammy's name has gone forward for Power Court.

Yes. Paul Clark almost ended his career. Not as bad as the article about Sammy Wightman but terrible for Lil at the time

Apparently (I think) he never made it to a final as referee himself. So maybe a bit of justice was done.

Yes, I never saw it but sound like it was an awful challenge.

I saw Fuccillo making his comeback in a reserve game, scored a cracker. Really decent player.

He broke his leg again coming back from the first break - in a reserve match I think. I know he went on to have a pretty good career but before those injuries I thought he was headed for the very top. He came through with Ricky Hill and for my money was just as good.

Yes, I think there was even talk of him playing for Italy at one point. I am wondering now if the reserve game I saw was his first or second comeback . . . too long ago!

                          That’s right, there was (Italy).

I believe he’s still involved with local football around Bedford - I worked with a fellow from around that way a few years ago who knew him quite well.

I just looked at Wiki which has him at Bristol City as a scout, though that wouldn't preclude him being involved more locally too if still true.

                                Possibly, yeah.

Another of that old youth team to come through with Ricky and Lil and who also had a half decent career was a fellow called Peter Mead. He scouted for the Town for years, I knew the family quite well. Pete famously recommended Geoff Horsfield (Halifax) and Barry Hayles to Lenny Lawrence - it wouldn’t have been an enormous amount of money for the pair of them but Kohler wouldn’t put his hand in his pocket. I saw his sister recently - apparently he’s now scouting for Crystal Palace.

I must admit I don't remember him at all, even if the name seems vaguely familiar. Somehow we had an incredibly good youth setup back then - though to be fair, it was a lot easier to do that in those days.

He spent the better part of his (league) career at Northampton - he made over 100 appearances for them I think (I stand to be corrected).

Another player who came out of that same youth team you’ll definitely know - Alan Biley. His Mum & Dad used to be on my old ‘Evening Post’ paper round (immediate memories of black fingers spring to mind )

That’s right, now I think of it she (his sister) did say Brighton but I know that in the past he had scouted for Palace. Long time since I last saw him, he was always very knowledgeable.

His sister did tell me that the Dad had sadly passed away a few years ago and that they all no longer had season tickets. They all used to sit on the halfway line in the Enclosure.

I take it you know them?
