Is football crap?
Posted by Shutupya on 22/5/2025, 8:15:27
Having watched some of the dreadful Man U v Spurs game last night begs the question has this season been one of the worst for general quality in a very long time?
Obviously our own performances have been mostly atrocious (leading to our demise) but the general standard of the Championship has been pretty dire and the limited amount of Premier League that I have seen has also been of poor quality. Liverpool deservedly won the league but is it a great Liverpool side? Which is more of a comment on the rest of the division and football in general at present.
Let's hope PSG and Inter can serve up something memorable next Saturday to try and save the season.

Agree with all of that
Which makes our double relegation all the more shit. Quite the 'achievement' to get relegated out of such a poor division this season
That game last night is right up there with the worst I've seen for a long time. And I sat through the Charlton v Wycombe play-off semi-final last week

There have been some good games this season, beating Watford, the Pompey v Newcastle cup game, the Inter v Barca game the other day. And some exquisite standout goals for me, Tonali, Solanke. But in general I just get fed up with the ridiculous levels of hype and the shite time wasting/feigning injury/playing for free kicks etc that has eaten into the game. The hard to comprehend rules nowadays don't help, eg the Palace keeper clearly hand ball but because VAR can only be used to check for sending off offense there's no free kick. Completely nonsensical. I generally dislike the direction football is going mainly because it's all becoming more boring. Too many overly precious types these days as well, both on and off the field.outlaws is not the barometer of sanity.
Barca vs Inter the other week was brilliant, but games like that feel like a bit of a throwback now. You hardly ever see that kind of football anymore.
I’ve said it before on here, but the whole coaching world seems obsessed with Guardiola’s tippy-tappy stuff. It’s killed off the mavericks and stripped loads of personality out of the game. Everything’s so rigid and process driven now, like players are just following instructions instead of expressing themselves.
It’s especially bad in English football coaching – everyone’s trying to copy that style and its endemic in coaching badges and through the entire structure so it feels like this is just how it’s going to be for a while.
Always had a lot of respect for Fergie for that reason. He actually liked having a maverick in his team and built sides that gave them the freedom to do their thing. Such a shame he never got the chance to manage Gazza.
Agree with all that, football is very rigid, play seems to go backwards more than forwards these days. Concede a goal and then the constant time wasting, game management and breaking up play begins leading to hardly any football.
Agree with a lot of that. I think the value of the unpredictable is massively underestimated though to be fair in this highly coached environment it can also be less effective.
I think it will go round like most cycles, someone will start being creative again and players used to the more systemic approach will find it harder to deal with and so it will change again.
I hope.

I recall many years ago Mick McCarthy when at Millwall in the 90's describing a loss to "parasite football." His team tried to play football but the opponents just set up to feed off mistakes, close down, waste time, destroy the game etc. I think that part of football has very much taken over.
In Scotland, when Rangers and Celtic started to splash the cash, the only way the other clubs could compete was to have 10 whippets on the pitch running, closing down etc. The result was that all the great qualities Scottish players had over the decades were bred out of them. We see that today in the English game - the lack of creative choices for the England national team.
The play makers like Preecey, Hoddle, Wilkins etc have all disappeared for most teams. City playing with no recognised striker. Set piece coaches are now vital to get the breakthrough. Score the first goal then play parasite football. It's very very dull.Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885
I read an interview with Bobby Gillespie years back. He said the Ramones were to blame for the lack of proper old school Scottish footballers, and in particular their song "Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue". Gillespie said that instead of playing football, the Glasgow youth were sniffing glue and listening to the Ramones. I reckon there could be an element of truth in that, especially as Gillespie himself went down that route.
That is the King of Farhat posts Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885
Theres maybe only one player in the top flight now with the spirit of a maverick and he barely gets a game for City these days

The game has no personalities. The players are more interested in conning and cheating than actually playing. The players are more interested in how they look than how they play. Football is over coached at the highest levels. It’s all about playing to a pre determined set of instructions, than lifting a head up and playing what’s in front of you. (Same issue in rugby at the highest levels) Football is fucking stupidly expensive. Players get far too much money and this notion that they have short careers is laughable. So what, why should they be able to retire in their thirties??? Not many of us can. The media and TV have destroyed any enjoyment of watching it due to their utter fucking drivel. Clubs trying to rinse every possible penny out of the fans can fuck off too.
Yes it’s shit.
Personally I have no issue with being relegated back to L1 because hopefully sense will return and we can be more in touch with the players and not have too much of the above.
Any players that do show a bit of personality get lambasted in the media. There's no place in the modern game, at the highest levels, for a Ronaldinho which is a big part of the problem.
The further away you get from the circus at the top, the better it is, imo
Over coached? Look no further than Jack Grealish. Played with a swagger at Villa and looked the real deal. Big move and Pep has coached him into a bang average winger who rarely beats a man and passes inside for the sake of the coaching manual. Does he care ? 180 thousand reasons not to I’d guess.
Spot on. Grealish is a very good example. Mr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885
I'm with Buzzard. Football has reached saturation point and generally I'm bored to death by it.

Agree there was little worth to pools, did it for years and won nothing. Bring back manual scoreboards, referees who were totally unfit but had a personality and English/British players in the PL.
And Streakers, definitely bring streakers back, no matter which sex, just watching plod & stewards chasing them all over the pitch brought excitement to a few games.
No, I never took binoculars to a match before you ask Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened. Terry Pratchett
Well to be fair, the guy with the bucket and sponge did seem capable of getting players back up in a fraction of the time that modern day physios take . . .
If I saw a fat bloke waddling towards me with a bucket of freezing water, I'd be quick to my feet too. Inside every old person is a young person wondering what happened. Terry Pratchett
I agree with nearly all of the above but let's not forget football was heading towards dire turgid crap - with some exceptions - well before the Sky days.
It's easy to get doey-eyed about the past (in all areas) but it certainly wasn't all great. Off the pitch, too, where it is now so sterile and souless - wasn't great fun constantly having to watch your back especially at away games: and anyone who claims it was just 'lads v lads' obviously didn't live through it.
Not defending modern football- which absolutely is shit - but let's be realistic too.
Next week sees the Fair Game conference. Limited in scope maybe, but some people are actually doing things to try and save/resuscitate the game and football pyramid. There will be a strong LTFC presence there.
Being shit scared to open your mouth at away matches up north and how it’s changed - I’ll give an example of that :- Newcastle away in November 1981 - one of the few games we lost that season, me and another fellow getting sussed out whilst walking to the station and having to seriously leg it - a couple of young Geordies (I swear Alan Shearer was one of them ) heard us talking and took umbrage at our accents, fortunately back then I was pretty light on my feet. Contrast that with the 4-4 draw up there last season and it seemed from the moment we set foot in the ‘Get Carter’ pub everyone wanted to make conversation with us - the locals couldn’t have been friendlier and we had a great night out up there.
Also, somewhat bizarrely - pretty much the first person I bumped into upon entering St James Park last year was the bloke with whom I’d been chased around the centre of Newcastle some 40 odd years previously and I think we both stumbled out the same sentence as we greeted one another ‘bit different from the last time we saw us up here eh!’
Didn’t you once tell me that Bolton was a particularly intimidating place to go back in the day - even for someone living in Greater Manchester?
Bolton was a bit intimidating and had to leg it back to the (nearby) station (old ground) a couple of times, once after calling some shitheads out for racism. Didn't go to the cup game with the darts, but Bolton pals tell me our fans scared the shit out of them that day.
But the time it was really dodgy for me was when I went with some Manc mates (the game where Dixie Deans got himself sent off for headbutting Paul Jones - highest he jumped all game - so he'd be suspended for Christmas - he never played for us again) as the locals spotted an ill concealed United scarf one of my mates was stupidly wearing. Similarly hairiest night at Elland Road was when a Manc mate chanted 'there's only one United. Manchester, la, la, la' as we went to the car after the match. That turned proper Keystone Kops!
Nobody has mentioned VAR ! Get rid. I would bring in automatically booking anyone that is trying to con the ref. So instead of waving play on, you stop the games and the other team gets free kick once the booking is done. Also force "injured" players off the pitch. All "head injuries " must stay off for 15 minutes minimum. Obviously, the clearly medical problems would be an exception. Diving in area would result in penalty at other end. Rant Rave Rant Rave.....Everything we think we are Is everything we ain't

FA Cup Final, Man City trailing, deep into added time, still passing sideways and backwards like robots as per the coaching manual. Yes, modern football is shit.
But it wasn't all great in the past. Remember the mindless hoof-ball in half-empty stadiums in the 1980s?
