No debuts on this dayMr J.C. Lomax having been called upon to give his opinion upon the proposed formation of a Town Club, said he was most emphatically in favour of a proposed Luton Town Football Club - 11th April 1885
Two bloody play off final defeats. Was far more angry after the York one. Completely lost it in the stadium. Thought we’d never get out of that league! But yes Everton was worse!
Think yourself lucky. I’d flown from the other side of the world to watch it.
I’ve never forgotten what a mate of mine said after that match (it was the third consecutive season we’d made the Conference P/O’s), quote - ‘it’s like we’ve got 40 something pre-season friendlies then a 2 or 3 game tournament’.
That was the year before - I didn’t have so far to travel that night as I was working at the same place as I am now!
Yeah, the great KC. The exact words were, quote - ‘come on Crumps, enough of these poncey wine bars. Take us to one of those proper northern boozers - you know, with pigeons and ferrets and stuff’
And of course he hated it. As he did everything in the aftermath of that game - and I had to put up with the grumpy twatishness as he and Farhat were staying at Crumpsall Towers!
Luckily he fell asleep on the train, but inadvertently tripped up David Platt (Coronation Street)*, momentarily opened his eyes, looked at Platt, called him a c>unt, and promptly fell back asleep.
There was a bit of an issue with the trains for me as I recall. I had to get a taxi to Oxford Road and it was a real last minute dash. Do you remember ‘Fool Circle’ being with us that night? I shared the taxi with him. I think he was going to Warrington.
I’ll remember that season for two reasons. One for getting caught in I think the worst thunderstorm I’ve ever witnessed and my phone suddenly going mad (Scott Rendell scoring at Carrow Road) (it was the middle of the night and I was desperately trying to find a pub that was open), the second was waking up in a Sydney hotel room to find out that we’d just lost 2-1 at home to Hyde .
Yep York wasn't the result we wanted but we came back stronger in the end. The atmosphere after and arguments with the stewards summed it up really.
Ian Feuer is probably the best goalie I've ever seen play for us. Still remember a double save he made that by today's standards would be replayed for days. He never quite recovered that form after an arm injury sadly. He had that aura for some games of being unbeatable.
