Still think Oxford is up there. Shit location, shit design, shit parking, shit local facilities (unless you like tenpin bowling). Its only redeeming feature is that it’s new enough that the seats and bogs are ok.
Wycombe and Reading for similar reasons as Oxford, terrible location. Would imagine Colchester is of a similar ilk nowadays too.
Kettering
West Ham was a good day out but the "matchday experience" which seems to be the focal point of many clubs was horrendous from the moment you crossed the river.
Actually, Colchester now has a considerable amount of housing around it. There's plenty of people near enough to walk it and a decent amount of parking for those who aren't. Bit of a pain getting out but that's no huge surprise.
Did you stay over? I felt sorry for anyone with any travel connections to get. It was a complete shambles.
I liked your list of worst grounds. I was looking forward to the new Spurs stadium with its much touted 'built for atmosphere'. Shite. The tone was set by Brighton, then the absolutely dead (apart from our fans, who were brilliant) Chelsea.
As for worst grounds on other considerations, blimey. So many candidates, even setting aside the Conference years, but I'd add Blackpool before redevelopment and the old Wigan ground's muddy grass bank (though still better than the new souless crap).
I stayed in Luton that night. After finally making it to the station, it was absolute chaos so sort sanctuary in a pub hoping it would clear. It didn't.🙈
Give me Halifax or Alfreton over Chelsea or Tottenham any day!
Mr and Mrs Soulhat did the same (I acted as an accomplice, naturally!). They got back to Bedford at 2am....
For some reason I absolutely love The Shay. One of my first ever away days back in the 60's and several entertaining visits over the years.
And Alfreton for that day Pelly and Luke Guttridge tore them apart and the separate occasion myself and the Hippy were escorted out of town* by 10 coppers!
🤣🤣 *unsuccessfully, the moment they dropped us at the station we doubled back to the nearby pub.
Exactly that and I wouldn’t change it for anything, even barrow away on a miserable cold Tuesday night and Gateshead at brunton park. My only disappointment apart from the obvious final losses and playoffs was going to Dorchester in the fa trophy and it getting called off whilst we were nearly there and not being able to make the rearranged game, although the thatchers was good that day when we rocked up at Yeovil v Carlisle, tried to call Weymouth to see if there game was still on but never got an answer, good old non league eh? Hope you are well see you next season mate.
Seeing the list below, shows that an athletics stadium isn't suitable for use as a football ground. You can add West Ham and Gateshead to those below (Don Valley, Newport and Withdean).
West Ham was better than I thought it was going to be….particularly liked the walk to the ground along the river Lea with lots of different watering holes. Helped that the weather was good so a beer in the sunshine….not as far away from the pitch than expected. Except for the result I enjoyed the day out.
Have to agree with City, Main Road used to be "interesting", especially negotiating with the street urchins for "car protection", but the Eitihad (spelling!), was just awful (hated the pre-match huge video screens with the pathetic posing of each of City's players as they were "introduced").
Also from the past: Difficult choice between Shrewsbury's bog-like patch, where Matt Tees' soaring header plopped into the mud on the goal-line and Rochdale, where the floodlights were mounted on telegraph poles.
Layer Road, Colchester where the floodlights generator sounded like a tractor in a shed belching diesel fumes and everywhere smelt of piss.
Habbin Stand, Abbey Stadium, Cambridge where the locals had a massive chip on their shoulder about their noisy neighbours from Bedfordshire. And it smelt of piss.
